- Waterdeep's Guild of Chandlers and Lamplighters goes on strike, leaving the city dark and dangerous at night.[2]
- The Blackstaff, Vajra Safahr, mobilizes the Gray Hands to determine the intentions of the green dragon Kofutacti, who was spotted above the Sea of Swords near Waterdhavian shipping lanes.[2]

Deaths in 1496 DR
- Caerhan Coalsmith dies while trying to destroy the Orrery of the Wanderer.[6]
- Halia Thornton, proprietor if the Phandalin Miner's Exchange and a member of the Town Council of Phandalin, is killed in secret. Many believe she has instead left town without saying why.[4]
1496 DR in environment
- An earthquake rocks the city of Waterdeep. It is caused by the activation of a powerful shrine, dedicated to That-Which-Endures, located in a tunnel system deep beneath the city.[6]
Miscellaneous
- Tall, black-cloaked skeletal figures are spotted at night in Waterdeep's City of the Dead.[2]
- A murderer in Waterdeep's North Ward attacks victims in broad daylight, severing their heads and feet. The feet are then taken by the killer.[2]
- One of the Walking Statues of Waterdeep appears to start crying. Some see this as a sign of great misfortune, others as a sign of good luck, and others simply blame the humidity.[2]
