Aganazzar's scorcher was an arcane evocation spell that created a destructive jet of flame.[2]

History[]

Aganazzar's scorcher was created by the wizard Aganazzar. This spell was originally known to have been inscribed on the first page of the Tome of the Covenant, a spellbook created by the four founders of the Covenant, and Aganazzar was known to have given the spell to his apprentices.[6][7][8]

The church of Kossuth managed by 1374 DR to convert this spell into one that clerics who were introduced to their faith's secrets could cast.[3]

The Red Wizards also got their hands on it and were known to use it shortly after Aganazzar's death.[9] It saw widespread use by the Red Wizards of Thay[9] and battle mages across Faerûn.[9]

The spell was well known among elven battlemages, who were known to craft magic rings of fire with it included, with command word of fete. One of these rings was used by Cadderly Bonaduce, that was used by to slay the assassin Ghost[10], and Dorigen Kel Lamond used one to cause havoc in Shilmista.[11]

This spell was found in the pamphlet Volo's Guide to All Things Magical, published in 1359 DR.[12]

Magelord Rimmen of the Scarlet Eye,[13] the sun elf wizard Meraera,[14] the energetic explorer known as Xara Tantlor,[15] the Moonstar Kyriani Agrivar,[16] Gromph Baenre,[17] and Pharaun Mizzrym knew how to cast this spell.[18]

Notes[]

  1. The spelling of his name was originally "Agannazar" in Forgotten Realms Adventures (page 45). The Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting 3rd edition uses "Aganazzar" on pages 66, 273, and 301 as does the Player's Guide to Faerûn on page 96. The Grand History of the Realms however spells it both ways: "Agannazar" on page 62, and "Aganazzar" on pages 88, 96, and 118. Using the latest and most frequent examples, his name is Aganazzar.
