An Opportunity for Profit by Dave Gross is the fifth novella in the Double Diamond Triangle Saga series.

The pirates hired to assassinate the kidnapped Waterdeep bride are hot on their prey. Having landed on the shores of the Utter East, they face great danger--all without knowing the identity of their employer. Now, as the pirates make their way across the eastern kingdoms, fate sets them on a collision course with another interested party.

Summary[]

Continuing their quest to assassinate Eidola of Neverwinter, Belmer Droon's hired vessel was approaching the shores of Doegan. Shortly after Orim Redbeard's ship left the Morning Bird, the crew noticed a magical rot that was devouring the hull, forcing the mercenaries to abandon the vessel and swim to the shore. Belmer Droon and his team, Belgin Dree, Brindra Arrose, Ingrar Welven, Jolloth Burbuck, Nargin Olnblade, Sharessa Stagwood, all survived the swim along with a big group of Jander Turbalt's sailors. The old captain felt nothing but resentment for the ship's loss, which was only exacerbated by the apparent threat of fiends and monsters who roamed the wilderness of Doegan. The sinking ship survivors encountered grotesque monstrosities who swarmed them, pushing them away from the sore into the forest. A stray bone devil started hunting the group, slowly culling the survivors to a small number, as they fled through the first towards civilization. The creatures slew all the sailors but the Belmer's gang. In one of the confrontations, the bone devil blinded Ingrar, and soon after, killed Brindra in one on one battle. Subsequently, the survivors reached the safety of Eldrinpar. There, captain Turbalt betrayed the group to the paladins of Tyr who recognized the mysterious Belmer. His true identity was that of the notorious assassin Artemis Entreri.

Notes[]

  1. The Abduction, p.6 states that the wedding of Piergeiron the Paladinson and Eidola took place in the Year of the Haunting, 1377 DR. However, that date is implausible. Khelben Arunsun died in 1374 DR as depicted in Blackstaff (novel). Furthermore, Aleena Paladinstar was stated to be gone from Waterdeep by 1372 DR, planeswalking (City of Splendors: Waterdeep). On the other hand, the events of the Descent to Undermountain took place in 1370 DR, during which Aleena was actively banned from adventuring and any danger by her father. In the events of The Paladins, as well as the finale of the DDTS, Aleena took a central role, no longer bound by her father's rules. She later, with all the experience she received from battling the Unseen and hordes of Tanar'ri, felt confident enough to use her magic to traverse the planes. This places DDTS events likely in 1371 DR. This also does not conflict with appearances by Artemis Entreri, and the Neshers.
