Analyze opponent was a divine magic divination spell available to priests, holy strategists, and holy warriors of the Red Knight, the Lady of Strategy. It let the caster gauge the strengths and weaknesses of one or more creatures for tactical intelligence.[1][2]

Effects[edit | edit source]

Beginning Red Knightists casting this spell could learn one strength or weakness about one creature. Higher level casters were able to learn up to four[1] or five[2] strengths and weaknesses about a single creature or about each member of a group of creatures.[1][2] The caster learned the most powerful advantages and disadvantages first. So, for example, the ability to cast finger of death at will would be revealed before a natural resistance to sonic energy.[1]

The targets of analyze opponent had a chance to resist the magic of this spell and, if successful, the caster learned nothing.[1][2]

Components[edit | edit source]

This spell had a somatic component and utilized the caster's holy symbol or divine focus.[1][2]

Rumors and legends[edit | edit source]

There was a legend about one of the first priests of Tempus who earned or won the Lady of Strategy's favor. He was granted analyze opponent and used it on a rakshasa. From this spell he learned of the rakshasa's weakness against blessed crossbow bolts, an important fact that was disseminated throughout the Realms.[2]
