Berg'inyon Baenre (alternately spelt Bergynion), the youngest son to Yvonnel, and interestingly the fifth Baenre son after Gromph, Doquaio Baenre, Jarlaxle, and Dantrag, is a fighter of great prowess. He is Drizzt Do'Urden's rival in the academy, but never once beats him. Later, when Drizzt comes back to the Underdark, Berg'inyon helps his brother Dantrag in fighting Drizzt. But when Dantrag begins to lose, Berg'inyon betrays Dantrag and leaves the fight. Drizzt kills Dantrag, and Berg'inyon becomes the new weapon master of his house.
Description
Handsome even for drow standards, Berg'inyon kept his short hair finely cut.[4]
Personality
He is described as a typical drow with high ambitions and no sense of morality. Berg'inyon, along with Kelnozz, is introduced as a classmate of Drizzt Do'Urden in Melee Magthere, where he is constantly ranked second to Drizzt, much to his dismay and to his mother's anger.[5]
Possessions
Being an elite drow soldier, Berg'inyon was skilled in the use of handling subterranean lizards, and armed himself with a 10 ft (3.05 m) death lance and a hand crossbow.[2]
History
He was initially trained by Dantrag. After graduating Melee Magthere, he commands House Baenre's lizard riders, and after the death of his elder brother, Dantrag, he becomes weapons master as well. After the drow retreat from their assault on Mithral Hall, Berg'inyon chooses to accept Jarlaxle's offer to join Bregan D'aerthe as a lieutenant of the renegade drow band (he rationalizes the instability that would likely plague House Baenre after the disastrous failed conquest of Mithral Hall and the likelihood that Triel would soon give birth to a son she would groom to replace Berg'inyon as the weapons master, which among the drow would likely mean Berg'inyon's death).
When Crenshinibon begins to cloud Jarlaxle's judgment, Berg'inyon joins Rai-guy, and Kimmuriel Oblodra in their attempt to usurp control of Bregan D'aerthe. In the ensuing conflict Berg'inyon faces off against the human assassin Artemis Entreri in single combat with Berg'inyon desiring to fight the one considered Drizzt's equal. However, Entreri proves the better and kills Berg'inyon during the fight in the lair of the red dragon Hephaestus.[6]
