The Black Blood was a tribe of lycanthropes and shifters on the Isle of Moray.[2][3]

Organization[]

The Black Bloods worshiped the beastlord Malar[2][4] and were determined to use the two moonwells on the island they conquered to summon Kazgoroth, an aspect of him that had once terrorized the Moonshae Isles.[5]

Activities[]

The Black Bloods focused much of their attention on Moray's coastline and moonwells.[5] They performed gruesome rituals in their bid to summon Kazgoroth[2] and were indiscriminate regarding who they killed to achieve this goal, being as pleased with orcs and trolls as any humanoid. However, they often tried to capture their prey and transport them back to the moonwells, as they recognized this was integral to achieving their goal.[5]

When not focusing on Moray, the Black Bloods led savage longship raids on neighboring islands.[3]

Tactics[]

Most members of this organization employed simple, animalistic battle tactics. With lycanthropes rushing foward for close-quarters combat as human mages stayed back to support them with their spells.[6]

The lycanthropes within the organization that had originated from the Brokenstone Vale sometimes took on the form of a human to trick unsuspecting innocents into either unwittingly assisting them or simply drop their guard.[5]

Relationships[]

The lycanthropes within the organization that had originated from the Brokenstone Vale forged alliances between the Black Bloods and the fomorian Queen Connomae of Oman's Isle.[5]

The Black Bloods allowed the lizardfolk tribes of Breasal Marsh to hold sway over Moray's interior so that they could focus their attention elsewhere. However, there were some tribes among them that secretly awaited a day to revolt against this state of affairs, having received powers and a vision of a better future from the deity Silvanus.[5]

The Black Bloods were also allied with a number of powerful monsters, including the purple dragon known as Whitescar.[7] And they commanded a number of orc and ettin tribes as troops.[7][8]

History[]

The Black Blood tribe were originally connected to the People of the Black Blood, but due to the great distance between them and Malar's demotion during the Spellplague the two groups grew divided.[3]

At some point the Black Bloods discovered a secret cave beneath the Orcskull Mountains of Moray, containing a primitive temple with a glyph-inscribed stone slab. They went on to consecrate it to Malar.[4]

As of 1479 DR, the tribe controlled most of Moray in the Moonshae Isles. They frequently attacked civilized communities and groups on the island,[2] such as the settlements of Caer Moray, Dynnegall,[5] as well as Kork, whose population they had wiped out.[9] They also attacked anyone that tried to pass through Moray.[10]

Eventually, a jackalwere by the name of Twaine Stone infiltrated Caer Moray. He coordinated with the Black Bloods using secrets messages left outside the city's walls, planning a large-scale assault. In the lead up to such an assault he was sabotaging the city's defenses and planned to leave its gates open when the time came.[5]

For a short time they made war with several allied lizardman tribes on the island, until eventually the more clever members of each side found that they worshiped the same god and united them in the goal of reawakening Kazgoroth.[5] Together they fought against the Amnians, who had resettled the town of Kork, and their efforts to construct a road to Moray's interior for the purpose of accessing valuable resources.[9]

Later in the year of 1479 DR, Daffyd Mac Lyrr began devising an expedition to Moray[11] to liberate it from the Black Bloods,[7][11] discussing the plans with his grandfather's generals and allies. He also discovered an old map that showed the location of what he believed to be their temple,[7] but was in actuality a temple that they had given over to the purple dragon Whitescar to act as its lair.[12] At the time Daffyd was attempting this expedition some Amnian envoys of "The Fisherman", which included a green dragon wyrmling, were attempting to establish an alliance and commercial ties with the Black Bloods. They requested control of a number of mines and some slaves in return for quality ammunition and weapons made of steel.[13]

Members[]

The tribe was made up of Faerûnian born lycanthropes[2][5] and shifters,[3] as well as were-beasts who had traveled from the Feywild region of Brokenstone Vale.[2][5] Of all members in the tribe, those from Brokenstone Vale were the stronger and more rational ones.[5]
