An update

So my job at the library affords me free wi-fi when I'm not busy which gives me a couple of hours, four days a week to do internet things.

Of course that time is completely dependent on my workload and the amount of help the patrons need from me but it's still good news. The job lasts for a little over six weeks more so we'll see what can be done in that time period.

The time is also useful for working on those Pathfinder campaigns I mentioned in my last post

Rambling

Huh, I can make a blog post too.

After getting a bad cold last week, the only thing I felt able to do was wiki writing, but didn't feel like tackling anything big. I picked over my current projects — temples and priests of the church of Ilmater, "The Bounty Seekers Of Manshaka", etc. — for a while, but couldn't get inspired. I'm a bit worn-out on the Ilmater topic, and I need to make a big Manshaka article to enter comics lore, and if I'm going to do that, I might as well work on another city. I seem to have lots of big content projects on the go. In the end, I realised what I really wanted was to go back to my home in the Realms, the Vast, and finish my work there. :D So, I went to Highbank Forest, the roads, and now I'm at Tantras. That w…

The chores of being a DM

So, back in January I mentioned a new Pathfinder campaign I was starting. Well, now I'm also back running a game that started last autumn. Both are very involved and long-term.

They run every week, one on Tuesdays and the other on Wednesdays. I've barely been able to keep up my preparations for both of them over the last several weeks. Next week, I'm starting a new temp job at a library and in June I begin a trio of short-term courses. I have a feeling that my arse will be well and truly kicked by the workload and I may have to put one of my games on hiatus.

I do a good job of creating contingencies for when my players go off course in an adventure but doing so creates SO much more work. Then there's the ever-present temptation to spend my '…

An Update and a Commentary

Hello all. I've been writing edit summaries for my larger edits over the last couple of months complaining about how difficult making edits is with a tablet device. This is because, currently, a tablet is my only resource for making any. I used to use my local library to make edits but at some point in the past...six months I think, Wikia has made the page editor impossible to load on Internet Explorer 6 - a browser my local library refuses to upgrade from.

Editing on a tablet makes it practically impossible to copy/paste text meaning I have to type out everything myself and as I mentioned in an earlier post, my long absences have meant that I've forgotten a lot of the templates, etc. that I used to know off by heart and therefore have to k…

Frickin' Frustratin'

My internet is about to go down the toilet again. I've only had about five or six weeks (as usual, just about enough time for me to get used to it so I'll suffer more without it). I'll try and get on when I can but it'll be even less frequent than it has been lately. That means no more big articles, just relatively small contant addendums, grammar, admin duties, etc.

Sorry. I can't wait until this crap can be sorted out but who knows when that'll be?

Talking about the weather.

So apparently, over in Ontario, The Greenwood is struggling with a lot of snowstorms. Here in England, we're all struggling with electical storms and a lot of rain.

Despite it all, even though we've had half a dozen power cuts in the last 56 hours, I'm working my little socks off on a new Pathfinder Campaign that starts next week.

Similarly, Ed, despite falling trees and metric tonnes of snow, is answering a backlog of Realmslore questions over on Candlekeep (via The Hooded One) as well as writing sourcebooks for the upcoming 5th edition.

Hope everyone here had a happy holiday season - mine could have been better.

I'm so angry with myself

I thought the categories were just taking a long time to catch up but I'd completely forgotten the sorting method we use for categorizing years detailed at Forgotten Realms Wiki:Sorting the years. All of the new pages that I've been making lately have been pushed right to the backs of their respective category pages.

D&D Next adventures

I recently got my hands on copies of Ghosts of Dragonspear Castle, Murder in Baldur's Gate and Legacy of the Crystal Shard. I haven't read all the way through any of them yet but I am intrigued by each in a different way.

Ghosts is nothing special. I was really excited when I got it but then I found that over half of the book is 5e rules and blank pages. I'd MUCH rather have Wizards release Eric Boyd's Under Illefarn Anew instead. I haven't yet found a concrete date for the adventure's events yet either, though that's only annoying because of a side project I've been working on - The Grand History of the Realms Expansion Pack.

Murder in Baldur's Gate is interesting in that it comes with a big ole map of the city but I was disappointed to see s…

Finding the path

Not only have I had my internet time cut infernally short AGAIN, I find myself distracted by Paizo's wonderful RPG - Pathfinder.

I never really converted from 3.5 to 4th edition DnD and I'm thinking of looking for people to playtest 5th edition with me but Pathfinder fixes all the issues I had with 3.5 without making a significant departure from the details that I've already memorized (I'm a walking encyclopedia of the 3.5 ruleset).

Not only do I enjoy the rules, I also like the world of Golarion - the campaign setting for the vast majority of Pathfinder's adventures. A friend of mine burned me a DVD with all the pdfs they own so that I could begin work on writing and running games for them and I expect to begin buying some of the books in a…

A small little Fan-Fiction I wrote... it's funny!

This one's for all of you Forgotten Realms fans!

A small little fan fiction...

Jhistal would have continued, but with a gentle push by Jarlaxle he followed the drow to stand up next to Kimmurial, who looked over Jhistal curiously. "This drow I have not met before. Is he from Ched Nasad?" the drow psionist asked.

"Oei, I'm not from no Chad Nesbitt!" Jhistal said.

"Ched Nasad." the psionist corrected.

"Whatever." Jhistal said.

DnD Price List

I've always been bothered by the lack of reasonableness of the official item price lists in DnD core books. There are alternate price lists out there but many seem to be wild guesses. I did some research and found actual Medieval prices for over 200 items. I put these into a spreadsheet and tied them back to the 3.5 official item price list as well as the treasure tables. I also created a formula so you can adjust the relative value of gold / item. I did this so if you want adventurers throwing gold around like crazy you can adjust the value of gold. Original posts at the Wizards community are here:

Time's-a-wastin'

My gaming group has had to stop meeting for the time being for two reasons involving the guy who hosts us. Reason the first: He has come down with a case of head lice and, so perturbed by them are myself and my players that we wish them gone before we return. Reason the second: His heartless grandfather will soon die of testicular cancer. The man is a vile brute who beat his wife, child and grandchild but, out of familial respect (and perhaps in hope of a deathbed apology) our host is going away to visit him before he dies.

So there will be no Dungeons and Dragons for the nonce.

I've been filling the time freed up by not gaming with reading. I've still got 2 books of George Martin's Song of Ice & Fire saga to get through and I've also been c…

Talismans

How to make Talismans

Items needed:

~ Something to be the talisman ( cloth with a sign on it, bell, bead, wand, etc.)

~ Lake, forest, feild, mountain, etc.

Spiritual items needed:

~ Made up chant

~ Red moon ( something special happening in space: metiorite shower, full moon, red full moon works best,)

Directions:

Take the talisman hold it up to the moon and say the chant. If It's for you and your Best friend go ahead it still works-it works even more with two people! More magic is entered into the talisman with two people. Take a moment and breathe in the air and let the magic flow through you. Open your eyes and be happy. If you can, hang it over your bed, sleep next to it, or put it under your pillow. Sleep, sleep, sleep! The next day if you fin…

Happy Birthday To Me

It's my birthday today. Unfortunately, I've been on my feet almost constantly since I woke up. Now is the first real chance I've had to sit down.

I was recently diagnosed with depression which makes sense since I've been growing steadily more and more miserable over the past 5 years.

A local doctor referred me to a councillor who was supposed to call me to tell me when a proper assessment of my state of mind could be scheduled. I recieved a letter yesterday which explained that they tried to call me but couldn't get through. This is utter rot as I saw the doctor write down my telephone number correctly and I've received no missed calls on my phone which has been on constantly since I met with her. The letter also said that if I don't contact…

5E Realms

I watched the live video of GenCon with Ed Greenwood, and want to share what I learned:

There will be an event that transitions from 4th to 5th edition, known as the Sundering. Ed has assured us that this isn't as jarring as the Time of Troubles or the Spellplague. This story will be told by six veteran Realms writers, each with their own novel. They are as follows:

  • The Companions - R.A. Salvatore
  • The Godborn - Paul S. Kemp
  • The Adversary - Erin M. Evans
  • The Reaver - Richard Lee Byers
  • The Sentinel - Troy Denning
  • The Herald - Ed Greenwood

Second day edit: These novels will come out every two months starting in August of 2013.

Wizards of the Coast will be publishing a number of adventures and then taking the results of those adventures (from sanctioned events,…

Starting...sort of fresh

Doubling the playing sessions has had the effect of the players getting more involved in the game. Going to have to stop doing that next month but until then I'm going to try and make the most of it.

Last session was a bit of a disaster. The group encountered a gorgon during the last segment of the module. One breath attack later and 3/5ths of the party were turned to stone.

Granted, the last two PCs managed to defeat 2 more encounters by themselves after the fact while they were searching for a way to free the rest, but when Despayr the black dragon, blessed by Shar, turned up to test their defences, he found them wanting. Both barely survived the encounter and decided on a stealthy approach but it wasn't good enough. The last survivor limp…

Bye again

I came back from a great evening out with friends and loved ones watching The Dark Knight Rises (great film btw) on the 25th of July, only to be told that I'd been disconnected from the internet again.

I had just over 2 months of home internet since I was last in this same situation. Just enough time for me to have started making connections with people that I haven't spoken to since 2009, just enough time for me to become part of online communities - like this one - again, just enough time to make me depressed that I don't have something that I'd been getting on fine without for 3 years.

I won't go into details but I'm really pissed off with those responsible for this.

The gaming group is doing better. It's summer so we have more opportunit…

And back to the tabletop

One thing I'm getting annoyed with at the moment are battle maps. You have an encounter with a group of foes and then, solely to keep track of where everyone is standing, who is flanking who, who has line of sight to where, etc. you, as DM have to build a map - out of Dungeon Tiles if you have them or with paper if you don't.

I mentioned a couple of posts ago that I was running the 'Weave Campaign' and in the second chaper of the first module of this campaign there are a couple of quite large scale encounters. For groups that are used to mostly dungeon delving and city-based games where the biggest rooms are mansion foyers, playing on a 27x39 grid map can feel more like a tabletop wargame than a skirmish. Now consider that a single Dungeon …

Some site-related things

From my user page, people can see when I am possibly available for editing/help.

This is a drastic improvement over the situation I was in 2 weeks ago but still not ideal. I tend to sleep during a lot of the time that I could potentially go online and I can't spend all of my time on this site.

However, as you've hopefully seen on pages like Thazalhar I am making more of an effort to source my articles whereas in the past, this was something that I'd decided to allay in order to input raw information.

I am in great demand over on Legacy of Kain wiki but this site will always come first.

A bit of refreshment

A couple of weeks ago I decided that I couldn't cope with the campaign as well as I would have liked.

Unless you spend all of your time writing it so you have all the content you need ready for any given situation, a freeform adventure requires you to anticipate your player's future actions and prepare for them. I was finding that I was failing at this task. My players went in different directions to what I was expecting and I found myself on several sessions not having any prepared material to use with them. I had planned for this eventuality and placed a few guides into the campaign to push them in a particular direction if ever I was feeling to pressured but I'm not a very authoritarian DM and didn't push these guides hard enough to have…

I posted this on another wiki too. I spend almost everyday on it. I am hoping since you love this series then you'll help contribute to my site.

Next steps

After a rest, the party has gotten back to adventuring. So far, they're doing better than normal (with one follower being the exception. He's been the frequent victim of drain attacks and the party lacks restorative magic). They managed to get through a section of dungeon I thought they'd find much more difficult. As it turns out, it was merely annoying.

I managed to get a friend to come join in yesterday, though he's said from the get-go that he won't be there every week.

As for me, I'm getting really distracted by new ideas. All of the ones I've pitched to the group have been supported but, just like this current evil campaign I'm worried that they'll jump the gun and pressure me to start them. I've never been blessed with a great deal of …

Man, my guys suck

My campain for my PnP group is quite large; potentially epic in scope. The players however, will not reach that kind of power level if they continue to DIE at this rate. This week they lost another player character, making it the second death in 4 sessions.

This is especially upsetting as the PC who died had a personal quest available to her that I was particularly proud of.

The campaign that they are on is of a challenge level roughly 2 ECLs below their average but apparently 3 monstrous ECL 10 characters can't take on a Behir.

To recap: There is a moon elf vampire spawn archer (Ranger 2 with a +1 composite shortbow [+4 Str] and AC 22), a human warrior (Fallen Paladin 8/Blackguard 2 with a bastard sword Legacy Weapon (and the least legacy fe…

The 'evil' campaign

Under mounting pressure from my players I rushed the start of the 'evil' campaign which is more accurately titled 'no alignment/race restrictions' campaign but I do agree that 'evil' rolls off the tongue a little better.

Started at ECL 8 and I ended up with a human blackguard recovering from a bout of insanity, an elven vampire spawn and a natural wererat troll (I had to update the troll monster class to 3.5 and he's currently 6 out of 11 levels through it) looking to advance in the War Hulk PrC from the Miniatures Handbook.

Two problems with this selection: I've DM'd campaigns before with vampire players and sunlight is always an issue. A parties activites are usually severely hampered if they can only go out during night but while digging…

Another long absence, another long diatribe

Druid's original player is back! With her comes someone to (occasionally) take over Paladin and several new applicants to the group. The room we play in can only accommodate an absolute maximum of 7 people, which is good since I've had trouble in the past keeping parties of more than 6 people cohesive.

Average party level is 9th now but new applicants will be starting at 7th for a while. Druid's player decided to create a new Druid instead of taking over a spare character or raising her old one from the dead (a lot has happened since my last post). The new party Rogue (who used to play Sorceress and took over for Druid until she died) was also playing a Favoured Soul who was the party healer. Not wanting to play 2 characters any more, Rogue…

Life, Love and Gaming

Each of the 'single-session' modules have been taking three since the Artificier joined up. But now, he is gone. Having behaved like an absolute child during our most recent session, our host (who also plays the party Bard) asked him to leave. I don't like this situation one bit. The Artificier was a rules sponge. He'd shown the most promise of any player I've ever run a campaign for in terms of learning how to play the game. He was making his first steps on the road to becoming a top-quality Dungeon Master too but he brought his exile upon himself.

The Artificer was almost ready to begin building golems, he was already prepared to build a homunculus. He had begun jealously gathering gold and loot, he'd already managed to bogart the entire …

More PnP group silliness

Our Artificier is still distracting the party, slowing down the group's progress through the campaign but the others have finally seen the best use for him: creating things! This has at least provided a level of acceptance. He can make masterwork quality items for 1/3 cost and scribe scrolls dirt cheap. 20 scrolls of cure light wounds and a load of masterwork arms and armour later, the group like him a lot more. He also doubles as an efficient rogue which is great as the party rogue was killed by a wortling in the last adventure. The rogue then rolled up a bard which has proved to be a further boon to the party, he has the best ability scores I've ever witnessed being rolled during character creation. Inspiring courage really helps out wit…

Another update

The party finished their first adventure on a sad note. After I dropped numerous hints the Druid, who had assumed leadership, insisted on entering an entrance to the Underdark. At least she gave a roleplaying excuse as to why she wanted to do so, the ability to roleplay has been lacking in all of them. They wandered through honeycombing Underdark tunnels, relying on the Druid's survival skill to make sure they didn't get lost. After a day & a half of trying to find their way through, they were trapped in a grick ambush. Completely outmaneuvered & faced with the grick DR/magic with not a single magic weapon between them, the party fought bravely but foolishly. The sorceress sent her weasel familiar charging into melee combat, not with any t…

The first adventure.

Everyone I expected to turn up did turn up this time. 5 & 6 were still no-shows and I don't hold out much hope.

Like every new group I've ever DM'd for, it took some work just to get the party to be attentive enough for me to start. Once I had their attention though things began to go smoothly. The first combat went by alright but they were thanking the foresight of the Sorceress for taking a wand of Cure Light Wounds as her regional equipment even though she couldn't use it, as the Druid certainly could.

I quickly got the lay of the characters land. The Rogue was a Chaotic Nutcase (I've seen quite a few of those in my time and they never get any less tiring.) - Steal anything that can be dragged out of there, use violence to intimidate NPCs…

Update on the game group

For the longest time it seems, our group was looking for a 4th player to balance the exp:challenge ratio. When we lost our original No.3 to time constraints I considered giving up, even though 1 & 2 were still super-eager. Suddenly we get three applications all at once! How excited were we at that point?

Last week was our first session. Our new No. 3 couldn't make it but No. 2 had to go pick up 5 & 6 as they didn't know where we were holding the game. Myself & No. 1 arrived a little later than I'd hoped but when we got there only No. 4 was waiting, no sign of the other three people we were expecting. Turns out No. 2 is prone to misadventures and this time he had gotten on a bus going in completely the opposite direction to where he was supp…

Oasis/New Wikia Look Solution

If you're like me and hate the new skin that the Big Wigs at Wikia have forced upon us, I have a (limited) workaround. If you use Firefox or Chrome, download the Userstyles addon (that link has links to the browser-specific addons) and use the code below. What it does is:

  • Changes the page's width from fixed width to variable width.
  • Removes the 'Latest Photos' section on the right (you can keep this by getting rid of the .LatestPhotosModule line.
  • Shrinks the annoying toolbar at the bottom so that its the same width as the right pane in the layout. That way, it won't float over any in-browser search you do.

Please note that I haven't fully tested it and therefore there may be certain pages that still show the fixed width crap.

Starting a new gaming group is harder than I thought.

I've forgotten how long it's been since the idea was put forward for me to start up a brand new PnP D&D group. Must be at least 3 months now.

Back when I was in college it was easy. Found a whole bunch of folks who wanted to see what it was like and since we convened on campus nearly every day it was easy to organize sessions.

This new group I'm trying to make keeps throwing obstacles in my way. I can't remember how long it took for us to find a venue and I've had 3 or 4 players drop out before we even got to character creation. I now have 4 players who seem like they'll stay the course but 2 of them are still dragging their feet in regards to handing me a copy of their sheet. It sucks living in the countryside sometimes. I don't drive and p…

Gauntlgrym & the new Neverwinter franchise

The first inclination I had that Neverwinter was going to be a continuing franchise was a comment made by Ed Greenwood on his Facebook blog about Dungeons and Dragons: Neverwinter, little did I know at the time how big WotC was going to make it.

Now, the game is being coupled with a trilogy of novels by their best-selling author R.A. Salvatore (taking up half of those left that he has to write by the terms of his contract), and seemingly a supplement that will kick-start what looks like a miniature campaign setting in & of itself.

I don't get enough time online to really investigate DnD:Nw but I did get given the first of those books: Gauntlgrym for my birthday on Wednesday. I finished said book yesterday afternoon and I came away from it wi…

How infuriating is this?

When the Living Forgotten Realms campaign was essentially dropped back in 2006, all of the modules were supposed to have been available for sale at RPGA booths at conventions (at least that's what I heard). Not only do I not live in the states & therefore couldn't get to an RPGA booth but the way LFR was dropped meant that all support disappeared as well and noone sold all of the modules.

Thanks to the efforts of my wonderful girlfriend, I now possess 23 of the 28 modules published but so little is remembered of the campaign that I'm finding these last few modules impossible to get a hold of. There's a guy in Texas selling off two of the modules (LGR16 - In Cold Blood & LGR17 - Tour of Duty) for $15 each but those are both ones I already po…
