Blueberries were a common type of berry in the Realms that grew on bushes.[1]
Habitats[]
Places in the Realms where blueberries were known to grow included:
- Cormanthor,[2] particularly in the Starwood.[3]
- Cormyr produced hundreds of acres of blueberries.[1] Some of the settlements that were known to farm them included Thunderstone[4] and Wheloon.[5] There were also bogs to the west of Kirinwood that yielded bushels of blueberries.[6]
- The Silvershield estate in Baldur's Gate.[7]
- In north Faerûn, they could be found in the Earthspur Mountains.[8][9]
- In northwest Faerûn, they could be found in the Nether Mountains.[10]
History[]
In the mid–14th century DR, a farmer from Thunderstone named Del Geery used the dried skin of a hydra to make coverings for his raspberry, blueberry, and strawberry bushes. This covering kept the air around them at a cool 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius), extending their growing period deep into autumn. The hydra hides proved to be effective only on these three types of berry bush.[4]
Species[]
- Bilberry, a species of blueberry that was endemic to the High Moor plateau[11] and the Serpent Hills.[12]
Usages[]
- The bears that inhabited the forest of Cormanthor particularly favored gooseberries and blueberries to most other food.[2]
- The High Flagon in Waterdeep offered its patrons sweet tarts with blueberry filling.[13]
- Blueberries were gathered by the Disciples of St. Sollars the Twice-Martyred and used to brew a wine that they were famous for.[8][9]
- Blueberries were one of the many types of edible berries in the Realms that could be used as material components for the spell goodberry.[14]
- Some used blueberries in the treatment of certain medical conditions, such as dropsy and typhoid.[15]
- The Green Hag of Lizard Marsh used blueberries to cook up a hag frozen treat called "Eye Scream", as described in the Witch's Brew Cookbook.[16]
