Cause fear was a cleric prayer[2] or a necromancy[3] or abjuration[9][10][14] spell used by both divine and arcane spellcasters. It could cause a creature to flee in panic from the caster.[2][3][9][10][14] Older versions of this spell were reversible, known as remove fear, and bolstered the morale and courage of the recipients.[9][10][14]

Effects[]

This spell/prayer has evolved over time: the prayer version could be used against a single creature within 50 feet (15 meters),[2] whereas the pre-Spellplague spell could effect more than one creature in a 30‑foot (9.1‑meter) area if the caster had sufficient experience.[3][9][10] The oldest version of cause fear required the caster to successfully touch a single target.[14] All versions filled the victims with dread and compelled them to flee the caster if they could not muster the will to resist.[2][3][9][10][14] The victim could avoid obstacles and hazards but it was more vulnerable to enemy assault.[2]

Components[]

Only verbal and somatic components were required to cast this spell.[3][9][10][14] After the Second Sundering, only verbal components were required.[1]
