A chime of exile was a magic item that allowed its user to cast a more powerful version of the banishment spell.[1]
Description[]
The chime of exile was silver in color, adorned with magical sigils engraved into its surface.[1]
Powers[]
When holding the chime, the user could cast banishment. This enhanced version of the spell would always succeed in banishing its target, unless the target was very powerful. In such cases, the spell had a chance of failure, similar to casting it normally.[1]
History[]
In the late 1490s DR,[note 1] a chime of exile belonging to Alustriel Silverhand could be found at her sanctum in Sigil.[1]

Notes[]
- ↑ Canon material provides conflicting information for the date of the events described in Vecna: Eve of Ruin and its prequel adventure, Vecna: Nest of the Eldritch Eye. Both adventures use the eruption of Mount Hotenow (in 1451 DR) as a reference: Eve of Ruin states that the eruption "nearly destroyed the city forty years ago" (p. 17), placing it circa 1491 DR, while Nest of the Eldritch Eye states the eruption to have happened "fifty years ago", placing it circa 1501 DR despite being the prequel. Unless a canon source provides clarity, this wiki will use "1490s DR" to refer to the dates of these adventures.
