Cinnabar was an ore of quicksilver that was used decoratively,[6] in magic spells and rituals,[2] and in poisonmaking.[3]

Cinnabar was a soft, red stone, with a weight of 506 pounds (230 kilograms) per 1 cubic foot (28 liters), making it one of the heaviest minerals.[7]

Availability[]

  • Cinnabar could be found in the form of a rich red sand, often near hot springs and volcanoes.[8]

Usages[]

Vermilion Dye

  • Cinnabar was processed for the metal mercury present in it.[8][7]
  • Cinnabar was ground down and used as to make rich vermilion dye for fabric.[8][7]
  • Cinnabar could be used as a material to create various decorations and runes.[6][9]
  • Cinnabar was used as an ingredient in poisons.[3]
  • In Waterdeep, carved cinnabar jewelry, such as brooches, could be seen worn by the wealthy.[1]
  • In Halruaa, wizards developed a spell that conjured cinnabar rain that possessed certain dispelling properties.[10]
