A clavichord was a large keyboard instrument.[1]
Description[]
These instruments were rather flat boxes of rectangular or oblong shape, measuring 1 ft (0.3 m) wide and a little over 3 ft (0.91 m) long. Their keyboard design was similar to that of their close relative the pipe organ, but in place of pipes they had horizontal metal strings[1] like the harpsichord. But unlike the latter relative, these strings were struck by its internal mechanism rather than plucked.[2]
Sound[]
Clavichords expressed soft and silvery tones, with the pitch varying depending upon how much force was struck upon the keys. They couldn't reach particularly loud volumes,[1] being quieter than harpsichords.[2]
Notable Users[]
Clavichords were often most appreciated by human communities[3] and were a popular showpiece in merchant homes.[1]
- The Bendekar's Mercantile storehouse in Ravens Bluff had a clavichord in their instruments collection.[4]
