Cloves were a type of spice in the Realms[1][2] noted for their aromatic nature.[1][5]

Availability[]

  • Aurora's Whole Realms Catalogue sold cloves across the reaches of Faerûn under its "Aurora's Larder" and "Priests' Alcove" sections.[1][2]
  • In the Thayan port city of Priador, one could commonly find imported cloves for sale in the Priador Emporium's spice shop.[6]
  • On the island nation of Wa, the port city of Akkaido often received shipments of cloves.[7]
  • Cloves were cultivated in some parts of Zakhara,[5] such as the city-state of Huzuz.[8]

Price[]

The price of cloves somewhat varied in Faerûn.[1][2] Whilst Aurora's Whole Realms Catalogue sold cloves for use by priests at a rate of 1 silver piece per 4 ounces (110 grams),[1] the cloves sold for culinary use under "Aurora's Larder" were priced at 35 gp per 1 ounce (28 grams).[2]

Over in the land of Zakhara, a 150 pounds (68,000 grams) chest of of cloves would be valued at 400 gold pieces.[8]

Usage[]

Food & Drink[]

  • Across the various higher-class inns, taverns, and other eateries in the Realms, the "First Meat" course in an eveningfeast meal was typically garnished with hard-boiled eggs that had been spiced with cloves.[9]
  • On the Malatran Plateau, cloves were used as a pickling spice, together with allspice, mustard seeds, black peppercorns, red chiles, coriander, ginger, and mace.[10]
  • Bowl of hares, the specialty dish of the Oak-Father's Boon, used cloves in its rich sauce.[11]
  • Fowl stew, a poultry dish from the Singing Sprite inn of Secomber, was flavored with a variety of spices, including a pinch of either cinnamon or ground cloves.[12]
  • Gravia's hot apple cider included two whole cloves as part of its recipe.[13]
  • Roast gammon pie, a Cormyrian dish, called for a finger of ground cloves, or in other words a heap just large enough to stay on a cook's finger.[14]
  • A typical recipe for mulled brew included whole cloves.[15]
  • Cloves were often a spice of choice when making Shoodra sauce.[16]
  • The spiced wine of Calimshan and Tethyr were flavored with a variety of herbs, spices, and fruits, including cloves. A specifically clove flavored wine could be ordered through Aurora's.[17]
  • Stag sausage, a prized meat good produced by Wyrmkindler Sausage Works, called for 1 thruppinch of cloves.[18]
  • Suulvyk, a rare hard-boiled egg in drow cuisine that was traditionally flavored with cloves imported from the World Above.[19]
  • Vilhon Cider was often said to be enhanced by the addition of cloves.[20]

Other[]

  • Due to their aromatic nature, cloves were sometimes used in incense,[21] scented oils,[22] perfumes,[23] and pipeweed.[24]
  • Cloves had a wide array of medicinal uses, including as anesthetic, disinfectant, germicide, and aiding in circulation.[25]

Trivia[]

  • In the land of Zakhara, the fragrance-loving great ghuls and sakinas were known to delight in the aroma of cloves.[5]
