Consolation of the Dark was an introductory Sharran text, penned in or before the 15th century DR.[1]

All other so-called gods are liars and charlatans, given to cheap tricks and easy answers. They seek to enthrall mortal hearts with promises that are beyond their ability to fulfill. Lady Shar does not do this; her words are honest, and her gift is simple: Her embrace awaits - Eternal darkness. The purest of nothingness. The end of all pain. It will come to us all, ultimately. Nothing else will matter - and it is the role of Lady Shar's children to hasten that understanding among the ignorant.
— Excerpt from Consolation of the Dark[1]

Content[]

Consolation of the Dark claimed that amongst other gods, only Shar was honest and direct, not dispensing shallow promises and false claims. Shar's promise to bring the Eternal darkness was a promise of curing all pain. As such, all followers of Sharran dogma were to bring pain and suffering in order to help others understand their deity and that her promise of darkness was a promise of kindness.[1]

History[]

In the Year of Three Ships Sailing, 1492 DR, a copy of Consolation of the Dark was found within the library of the Cloister of Sombre Embrace, a secret Sharran sect underneath the Lower City of Baldur's Gate.[1]
