Cvaal Daoran was a member of the Zhentarim and a leader of the Brothers of the Black Fist that went on to lead a hostile takeover of Phlan in the late 14th century DR.[1] He emerged as the city-state's first lord protector, starting a dynasty that would last for over a hundred years.[3][4]

Relationships[]

During his tenure as the leader of the Brothers of the Black Fist, Cvaal's reported directly to Kandar Milinal, Lord of the Citadel of the Raven.[1][2]

Cvaal was the founder of House Daoran the noble family of Phlan that ruled over the city for over a century. He was succeeded by his son Talaric, and grandson Anivar, neither of whom lived to the family's original patriarch.[3]

History[]

Cvaal was a member of the Zhentarim from before the Time of Troubles . After it, he became Hatemaster and captain of the Brothers of the Black Fist at the Citadel of the Raven, devoting himself to the god Bane,[1] by means of the church of Iyachtu Xvim.[5]

After the return of Bane, Cvaal commanded a Zhentilar army against Phlan in the Year of Risen Elfkin, 1375 DR,[5] seized the city and held it for five years before abolishing the Council of Ten. He installed himself as the of Lord Protector of Phlan,[6] The Brothers of the Black Fist came to be known as the Knights of the Black Fist and defended the city from the aggressive expansion of the returned Netherese Empire.[5]

In the Year of the Vindicated Warrior, 1383 DR, the Shadowbane War was raging across the Moonsea region. Lord Cvaal entered into an alliance with the dark fey of the Quivering Forest, ensuring the protection of his people and their city in exchange for respecting the borders of their forest home.[7] As Fzoul Chembryl and the Zhentarim entered into a twisted agreement with the aberrant phaerimm, spurning the Shadovar of Netheril,[8] Lord Protector Cvaal single-handedly slew one of the Princes of Shade.[3] To further separate Phlan from the control of the Zhentarim, Cvaal declared the title of Lord Protector as one of hereditary rule over Phlan, ensuring the legacy of House Daoran for decades to come.[4].
