"Dark Times in Hastarl" is a short story by Ed Greenwood, originally an outtake from a chapter in "Elminster: The Making of a Mage".[1]
Summary[]
The remainder of the Velvet Hands gang, led by Farl, ambushes the Moonclaws gang as they are exiting Athalgard, slaying many of them. As they do, Elminster manages to slay one mage, from the Magelords of Athalantar. A gargoyle animates as the Velvet Hands flee the scene.
They are chased by a gargoyle, which slays Larrin; they manage to slay it, but end up falling into a room where they're surrounded by Moonclaws somehow. The Moonclaws slay Tarth, and the leader of their force, Storntil, fights Farl, who slays him; however, sheer press of numbers allows the Moonclaws to slay Farl, and mortally wound Tassabra, who manages to escape with Eladar.
They make it to a walled cemetery where Tassabra tells Elminster to take her ring, for it is magic. She reveals she always knew Eladar was Elminster Aumar, because she was from Heldon too. She dies in his arms.
