The diatryma (pronounced: /diɑːˈtraɪmɑː/ dee-ah-TRY-mah[2]) was an ancient large, flightless bird native to the Underdark.[5]
Description[]
The gigantic bird was about 8 to 12 feet (2.4 to 3.7 meters) tall.[6][7] Its short wings rendered it flightless.[7] It had a thick neck and a deadly powerful hooked beak.[6]
Ecology[]
The drow used their hugely plumed feathers for decoration.[5] The mercenary Jarlaxle sported one of these on his wide brimmed hat, as both an ornamental and a functional magical item[8] known as a feather of diatryma summoning.[2][9] By blowing into the feather, Jarlaxle was able to summon a diatryma bird.[10]

Notes[]
- ↑ The 1st edition statistics for the phororhacos were used instead of the axe beak, since the Dragon article proposes it as a better approximation due to its height.
