A Docent was a kind of sentient magical object that could be used by warforged as an augmentation to their form. Though native to the isolated world of Eberron, similar artifacts were not unknown in the lands of Faerûn, either.[1][2][note 1]
Description[]
Docents were typically embedded inside the body of a warforged, most often inside the chest. Eberronian Docents were usually made of metal, but objects that functioned similarly to them could also be made from gemstones, wood, stone, or dragonscales.[1][2]
Powers[]
Docents could be made to impart almost any sort of magical effect, but most improved the bearer's resistance to physical and magical harm, acting not too differently in utility from a variety of other defensive magical items.[1][2]
History[]
As warforged were not known to Faerûn, Docents were likewise an unknown concept. However, when some adventurers from Eberron arrived in the mid-1480s DR, various local magical artifacts were identified as similar enough to Docents as to be considered interchangeable.[2]
Notable Docents[]
- An ancient gemstone, found in a Temple of Mystra.[4]
- Entropic heartstone, a magical gemstone containing the power of Graz'zt.[5]
- Heartwood, a pseudo-Docent made from wood.[6]
- Livewood core, a piece of living wood from a druidic grove.[7]
- The memory of fine regalia, a stone from Barovia imbued with haunting memories.[8]
- Stone heart, a stone lump from the Demonweb Pits.[4]
- Templar's docent, an Eberronian Docent used by knights of the Church of the Silver Flame.[9]

Notes[]
- ↑ Menace of the Underdark, Shadowfell Conspiracy, and their associated adventure packs can be placed within the period of 1484–1485 DR. This is based upon the ongoing Darkening (1484–1485 DR), and the Netherese events explicitly taking place at the same time as the drow invasion.
Magic of Myth Drannor is dated to 1374 DR, as it takes place during Ilsevele Miritar's Elven Crusade.
The Haunted Halls of Eveningstar appears to be set prior to the misadventures of the Swords of Eveningstar in 1348 DR.
The Mines of Tethyamar reflects the Rage of Demons in 1487 DR.
Mask of Deception is tied to the Tyranny of Dragons event in 1489 DR.
A Study in Sable and Search and Rescue are not tied to any particular events but can be assumed to be set in the 1480s DR as well due to the surrounding context.
