Dragonfire is a cooperative deck-building game set within the Forgotten Realms setting.
“
Dragonfire is a 3 to 6 player deckbuilding game set within the world's greatest roleplaying game, Dungeons & Dragons. Players choose from several classic fantasy races, from dwarf to elf, half-orc to human, and assume one of the quintessential roles of cleric, rogue, fighter, or wizard. Equipped with weapons, spells, and magic items, players begin their adventure along the famed Sword Coast, then journey to other Forgotten Realms locales, such as Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter, and Waterdeep, in future expansions. Along the way, they can level up their characters, find additional equipment, learn new feats, and much more.
Dragonfire is a cooperative adventure game where players take on classic medieval fantasy roles to complete an adventure. Each player starts with their own deck, and cards are added to their deck throughout the game. The player’s win anadventure if they complete and defeat all the encounters in the adventure.
Each player selects a character sheet, which describes the character's class and race. It's used to track damage the character suffers during the course of the game. Traits are added to as the character progresses in the game.
The heroes came to renown after an unnamed town in the vicinity of Daggerford was besieged by monsters from the dungeon not far from it. The heroes saved the city and cleared the dungeon. The word of the heroic stand spread far enough to reach Dutchess Daggerford's attention.[2]
An Ancient Evil Arises
The Dutchess requested adventurers' help in the search for Christos Tellum, the heir to Tellum's Hold near Waterdeep. The nobleman went missing in the Dessarin Valley after the recent forest fires, along with his party - eight well-armed guards, Q'ellon the Arcane, and Ardin, the local ranger guide.[2]
The heroes made their way through the monsters of wilderness and bandits to find the young Christos alone, famished, wearing rags leftover from his expensive clothes. The kept a flask close claiming it was his at last and collapsed of exhaustion. The adventurers couldn't do anything but camp for the night.[3]
In the morning, well-rested and well-fed, Christos revealed that he, indeed, was the last survivor of his group, and the flask was the goal of the expedition - it contained high magic. Even though Christos had strange outbursts, the heroes needed to escort the nobleman back to Dagggerford, to the Dutchess. The long three-day track was filled with challenges of the wilderness and scavengers but the heroes managed to reach Daggerford with lord Tellum's son alive. As the party approached the open gate they were met with militia yells, arrow fire, and terrifying snarls and shouts chased the heroes into the city. Unable to withstand the guards, the mysterious attackers retreated back into the forests. In the safety of the city's walls, they were greeted by Sir Isteval, a retired Purple Dragons knight. Christos staggered away from the knight's hands snarling in rage and called for Nadir. Unlike the heroes, Isteval seemed to recognize the name. The Purple Dragon commanded all present at the scene to submit to the knife. He drew blood from each person and studied it. Finding nothing, he commanded the heroes to be put up in the Dragonback Inn at the Dutchess' expense.[4]
The adventures quickly noticed that something was not right in Daggerford, the streets were empty, the inn was too quiet, and the grim-looking city guards traveled only in pairs. The following day Sir Isteval revealed the city has been plagued by unholy creatures, disappearances for two days and that it was unsafe moving Christos until the crisis has been dealt with. The creature plaguing Daggerford was a vampireDar Lavien who unleashed the undead on the population. The heroes confronted the blood-sucking creature, he revealed that he had an agreement with the mysterious Nadir. The vampire lord was defeated leaving the adventurers with forboding last words: "You will never know whom to trust."[5]
Even though the city was saved, the mental health of Christos has deteriorated, something in the flask has captured his mind, he was in no shape to be moved. The word has been sent to Lord Tellum but the healers from Waterdeep were still days away. Sir Isteval revealed that Nadir was a rakshasa that has been a bane on the city in the past. The Dutchess had no men to spear on the task - investigating the Ambergul Estate in hopes of finding anything to help alleviate Christos' mania.[6]
Randi was assigned to be the guide for the adventurers. The old and all but collapsed estate was half-a-day ride away from Daggerford. Randi leads the party to the estate's graveyard, through an ajar mausoleum door they ventured deep into the catacombs under the Ambergul Estate. The poor guide ended up being torn apart by the undead and monstrous slaadi led by the rakshasa. Nadir managed to slip away from the battle and heroes closed the planar gates that let the monsters into the catacombs. In one of the dungeon's rooms, adventurers discover a shining shortsword - the Ambergul Blade entrusted with diamonds, shining softly in the dark.[7]
On the way out of the catacombs, the heroes were met by Nadir once again. He told them that more planar gates have been opened in Daggerford, flooding it with slaadi. The sly rakshasa offered the adventurers treasures in exchange for the Ambergul Blade.[8]
The heroes rush back into the city just to see the streets filled with the bodies of slain militia, and sounds of combat coming from the keep. Christos Tellum and Sir Isteval were fighting for their lives, the young noble was still clutching his precious flask. The rakshasa took shape of the retired Purple Dragon knight, he managed to convince heroes to pass him the magic Ambergul blade. He hit the flask with the magical blade, unleashing an ancient red dragon trapped inside. Christos screamed the giant creature's name - Karrnsyrrl as the dragon grabbed the nobleman with its claws and disappeared into the horizon.[9]
Shadows Over Dragonspear Castle
The heroes followed the trail of destruction left by Karrnsyrrl along the Trade Way all the way to the High Moor. Surprisingly, no sign of the red dragon's devastation was seen around the Dragonspear Castle. The adventurers met a camped trade caravan from Calimshan, being stopped by the unnatural silence and swirling darkness. The head trader offered the group Calishite gold to investigate the dungeons under the castle, to either stop whatever was stirring the trouble or distract it long enough for the caravan to pass. The heroes soon discovered fiends led by a horned devil, eventually defeated by the group.[10]
Chaos in the Trollclaws
The heroes continued south reaching Trollclaw Hills, and eventually Fields of the Dead. Two days away from the Boareskyr Bridge the travelers started coming across groups of refugees moving the opposite direction from the group. The survivors of the are told the heroes of the orc, goblin, and gnoll marauders, ravaging the towns and villages in the area. When the heroes reached Boareskyr Bridge they were greeted by a paladin from Elturgard, Elysias. She controlled the bridge's crossing and heard about the adventures from Calishite merchant caravanners. She offered the passage in exchange for the heroes' help with the marauders. They along with a dozen other small groups traveled down the Winding Water into the fray. Successfully culling the hoards, the adventurers were granted the passage. Captain Leesdottir agreed to sail the heroes across the Sea of Swords telling them stories of the unrest caused by pirates and storm giants.[11]
Sea of Swords
The heroes continued sailing on Captain Leesdottir's merchant ship Sword Mistress towards the Moonshae Isles. The passage through private waters was not a smooth one, the ship was ambushed by threats of the sea, like sahuagin, kuo-toa, and merrow finishing their raid on an unfortunate pirate vessel. The sailors and the heroes successfully defended the Sword Mistress rescuing a few of the surviving pirates along the way. Bearing to love for the marauders of the sea, Captain Leesdottir threw the pirates overboard close enough to Mintarn for them to swim to.[12]
Moonshae Storms
“
Five faces have I seen. One wreathed in flame and eternal torment. Two bear ancient crowns. And three are the ones who struggle between light and darkness, seeking both oblivion and solace in sacrifice. One of those faces I recognize this day, stirring shadows in the back of my mind.
The Sword Mistress reached Moonshae Isles ravaged by the ancient red dragon and an attack of opportunity by the fomorians of Oman. A ki-rin showed up to stop the dragon, it managed to do so bud paid with its life. The great isle of Alaran blockaded each of its ports, denying the entrance to the heroes' vessel, routing it to the island of Gwynneth.[14]
Passing waters of Lotan's Abyss the ship was confronted by a female storm giantTylk as she rose from the depths of the sea. She accused the captain of shipping evil stinking of sulfur from the Nine Hells. The giant summoned a host of flying creatures and denizens of the deep, as Captain Leesdottir prepared for battle. After her defeat, the storm giant revealed that her actions were a response to a prophecy. She recognized one of the faces from it. She gave an ominous warning to the crew of the ship and retreated back into the depths.[13]
The ship reached a harbor in Corwell, once lush and beautiful lands have been scorched by Karrnsyrrl. It was clear the dragon was already gone from the area. The sword mistress arrived at a coastal town of Elyssyrr. The badly damaged town and its survivors were under attack by lycanthropes. The heroes joined the town militia in driving the invaders away. They succeeded by the first lights of dawn. The elyssyrrians gladly helped the heroes rest and recover as a payment for their aid. The heroes learned of the battle between a ki-rin and her brave stand against the dread dragon which resulted in her probably death even though Waylyn who witnessed the event knew for sure of her fate. As a result of the dragon's assault, the fomorian forces took over the Black Mountains and were crossing the Aspenheight Gap. Elyssyrr's halfling headmen Waylyn joined Captain Leesdottir and the heroes in taking care of the fallen locals and the werebeasts. One of the lycanthropes Robar Nightstalker was still alive and was taken captive. Waylyn knew the survivor, and countless attempts to cure him, the halfling promised it will be attempted once more.[15]
Saying their farewells to Captain Leesdottir and her crew the heroes headed deeper into the island. Aiding a halfling refugee family the heroes found the fomorians' new positions as well as the devil tiger responsible for the lycanthropes' uprising... There was no question, the rakshasa Nadir was here. The fomorian stronghold was the next target, the disruption of their alliance with lycanthropes. The heroes did encounter Nadir during the battle once again, and once again he slipped away, taunting the adventurers with something called the Cursed Key. The alliance seemed to be broken before it was formed. The heroes camped overnight to rest and recuperate, it was then when a messenger from Waylyn arrived at camp letting the heroes know that Robar Nightstalker has escaped aided by an illusory Kaladar Ranger, probably the damned rakshasa's doing.[16]
“
Lycanthropy. The power of change. To be stronger than you were... than your companions will ever be. It can be cured... usually. So isn't it strange that the disease hasn't been wiped clean from the face of the world? Do you know why that's?... Because it feels good.
”
— Nadir, making a deal with a lycanthrope adventurer.[17]
The following night the camp was disturbed by howling and sounds of movement around the camp. The group decided to move forward at night, trying to beat the pursuers. Instead, they marched right into Nadir's trap, the group was herded and trapped by rakshasa's lycanthropes. The heroes managed to survive the ambush, regrouping at a defensible location. Judging by Nadir's actions, the adventurers knew Karrnsyrrl has left the island, otherwise, the rakshasa would've used the dragon against them. But Nadir himself was looking for the "Cursed Key", and the heroes needed to find it first.[18]
The morning after the ambush they were approached by Drewlynn ad'Meiss, a fey envoy from Karador. Impressed with heroes' accomplishments the town envoy told them of the Prophecy of Ash and Flame that was connected to Karrnsyrrl. She offered the adventurers powerful magics to aid in their quest if they travel to the Llewyrr retreat of Synnoria to break the siege. The heroes used cunning and diversion instead of direct assault to succeed in the task. After spending a night in the forbidden city, the heroes were informed by a ranger Naini that the ki-rin that fended off the red dragon survived the battle. Her name was Daiwon, and she took refuge in the caves of Highhome. The elves of Synnoria sent the heroes through a portal to Cambro Mountains twenty miles away from the ki-rin's shelter.[19]
