Plot[]
The Jewels of Ardor await those brave enough to seek them. You, all of you, are at the front of a great wave that will sweep through this mine - and then the world.
When the Realms above learn about the Jewels of Ardor, many more will come. This is your chance, so make your claim now!
Never has there been a gemstone like the Jewel of Ardor! Its brightness, its glow, its value — it's enough to make a simple miner such as you or me as rich as a king!
In The Mines of Tethyamar the story is introduced by Asta the Deep-Minded, a concerned elder dwarf who has noticed the odd events surrounding the expedition to Tethyamar. She assigns the players the responsibility of helping out the other dwarves as they struggle against the drow and their own destructive urges, and uncovering the hidden plans behind the expedition.
Third Time's a Charm is started by Eluf the Steadfast, who reports that many dwarves have been taken captive by hostile drow operating in the nearby tunnels. Even worse, the rescue mission sent after them has also been captured. The scout Rielle Proudforge escaped to tell of the disaster, and so the players are sent to rescue them in turn. Fighting past the drow slavers Uhlsirayn, Phyrsinil, and Phy'xzar, the dwarves are freed from their bonds… though they refuse to leave, insisting they must stay to finish mining the jewels of ardor found in the tunnels there.
Graveyard Shift is begged upon the player by Hagen Silverthumb, who tells that he only just escaped Egil Hakon, who had gone mad and killed his fellow miners while working in Tethyamar Mineshaft 214S. Traveling down into the pit, the player encounters malfunctioning mining golems, furious elementals, and the undead remains of many, many fallen dwarves. Egil Hakon is found lurking among the dead, and possessed of strange magical powers he should not have. With his death, one of many crimes in Tethyamar is avenged.
Records of the Past, by the surveyor Freygar Plumbline, has the players go down into Ironvale Deep where Tethyamar's archived records were stored. He wishes to find the Tethyamar Master Manifest, which describes all the treasures found in Tethyamar's mines, and use it to more safely find and mine the jewels of ardor. The ruined settlement is filled with restless undead, hungry monsters, and an expedition of drow also searching for the Manifest. After facing their leader Kir'tan Melarn, the Manifest is recovered and brought back to Freygar for examination. After a look-through he decides that the Manifest is falsified and useless, as it only describes the jewels of ardor as low-value crystals not worth pursuing.
Strike Back has Gunhild the Watchful send the player on the offensive against the drow stronghold nearby. Though well defended, they are able to fight their way through and take out the High Priestess Talice Argith along with her followers Ildan Argith, Lieutenant Rauva, Captain Zyn, and slave master Velkas. A number of slaves can be freed, and an interesting guest, Alystin Dyrr can be chatted with. Despite destroying the drow force and saving many slaves, Gunhild is upset that the player did not take the time to gather more jewels of ardor.
Desire in the Dark starts with the frantic Inger Ingersdottir, who reports that Hal Stoutheart has disappeared on a walk in the Eastern Reaches. With the entire expedition resting on his capable shoulders, it's vital to get him back. The players find many dwarves and drow fighting to the death over the jewels of ardor, spectated by a cruel and amused Hal. He leads them further into the depths, all the way to Faraway. The players are able to untangle the illusions at play and rescue fellow victims Silent the drow and Zoraxzil the mind flayer, infuriating Graz'zt at the disrespect of deviating from his script. Past Faraway, the players grind through tunnels filled with fiend worms that Graz'zt had raised, before finally meeting the demon lord properly in his luxurious lair. After demonstrating all the guises and schemes he had used in Tethyamar, Graz'zt engages in a perfunctory battle for his own entertainment before departing with a flourish, leaving some gifts for his dance partners while promising to return and cause an even bigger disaster. Just beyond Graz'zt's lair the players find the mortal remains of the real Hal Stoutheart in Blue Stone Cavern, who died in the caves years ago while exploring. With Graz'zt gone the jewels of ardor lose their intoxicating qualities, returned to simple crystals, and the dwarves are freed from their maniacal compulsions.
