Dungeons and Dragons Online: Shadowfell Conspiracy is an expansion pack for Dungeons & Dragons Online released in August 2013. The expansion is primarily set in the Forgotten Realms, and focuses on a Netherese plot to destroy Cormyr using the Nether Scrolls.
Plot[]
Shadowfell Conspiracy is introduced by the Disciples of Shadow adventure pack, which involves the capture of the notorious Sharran priest Dedryk Black and his transportation to Wheloon Prison, before turning to the wider plot. The plot takes place roughly at the same time as Menace of the Underdark, and the content is broken into two main quest chains: Shadow over Wheloon, and The Secret of the Storm Horns. The two halves of Shadowfell Conspiracy are bridged by the adventure packs The Druid's Deep and The High Road of Shadows, which deal with the consequences of Oriphaun Huntsilver's actions after leaving Wheloon. The Shadow Under Thunderholme pack features the Netherese in a parallel but separate plot focused on the Cult of the Dragon.
Disciples of Shadow[]
Shadow of a Doubt is the final quest of Disciples of Shadow and requires Shadowfell Conspiracy to access. It has the players perform an interrogation of Dedryk at the Magistrate's Office on the docks on behalf of Celia Pendrick and Cornelius Latrimor. The interrogation is interrupted by the Shadowfell Nexus briefly dropping them into the Shadowfell, allowing a horde of shadows to attack. The players go look for Watch Captain Hillard, fighting past more shadows and rioting prisoners that had escaped from the prison, rescuing several Purple Dragons and protecting a docked ship along the way. After securing the area, the players return to the Magistrate's Office, only to find Cornelius Latrimor dead and Dedryk Black vanished, thanks to the infiltration of the assassin Teralyn.
Shadow Over Wheloon[]
Welcome to the service of Netheril. You now serve a mighty empire and a glorious cause. The Twelve Princes and the City of Shade may seem very far away at the moment. Yet soon Netheril will come to Cormyr, and Wheloon will become the newest province of our empire!
The Wheloon Prison is filled with hostile prisoners, monsters, and Shadovar agents, with the danger increasing the closer one gets to Oldstone Hall due to the Shadovar invasion of Wheloon. Players may be randomly dropped in and out of the Shadowfell version of the area, which functions as a similar but separate map. Scattered throughout the zone are notes and journal entries left by Oriphaun Huntsilver (on Heroic difficulty) and Archwizard Tyvrus (on Epic difficulty), which add details and context to the plot and wider world beyond the quests. The quest chain is provided by Davny Selkin (on Heroic) and Edric Crastmere (on Epic).
Friends in Low Places involves Faline Abbot sending the players into the city to aid the Wheloon natives, a group of non-Sharran inmates trapped in the prison since its creation based at Harvest Hall. In order to gain the trust of the group, the players assist the natives living in Wheloon's drainage culverts, who are being attacked by a violent gang of other inmates. Ultimately the native encampments are protected, while the gang led by Porto, Athea, and Aramiya Troise is defeated.
In A Lesson in Deception, Gaspry Bennik sends the players to assist a team of infiltrators investigating unusual gang activity in the prison. The spies led by Fordwin are captured by the Sharran priest Stanwick Galle, who has been unifying the disparate prisoners into a single large gang for Thultanthar. The players fight through the prisoners and their allies to defeat the foul priest, potentially causing the deaths of the captured Cormyrean spies or other innocents as they proceed.
The Thrill of the Hunt has Hargrove Jalt send the players to the merchant's townhouse that is home to the sadistic shadar-kai Karleth, who has captured the Magistrates Aloysius Cornwall and Fledren Hull. After overcoming the shadar-kai and their pets, the players defeat Karleth, hopefully before he kills his prisoners.
Army of Shadow is started by Iden Krell, who sends the players to infiltrate and attack the Netherese recruitment center, where the shade General Marthir arms and indoctrinates the prisoners into his army. After dropping the charade, the players take out his underlings Rantha and Darobard to unlock the gate to his tower, then face Marthir and his nightcrawler, stopping the Netherese recruitment inside the prison.
Through a Mirror Darkly ends the Shadovar invasion when Jacinta Last sends the players into Oldstone Hall to meet Oriphaun Huntsilver, kill Archwizard Tyvrus, and recover his Nether Scroll. The building is protected by physical and shadowy barriers, requiring the players to jump between material and shadow realms to bypass the defenses and get to Tyvrus. Though Tyvrus himself does the same, he is defeated and Oriphaun absconds with the Nether Scroll.
The Secret of the Storm Horns[]
The Storm Horns region appears peaceful, but the forests and mountains hide a sizable Netherese army as they work towards a plot to destroy Cormyr. The local wildlife are also overly hostile due to the poaching and logging performed by the Netherese forces. After escaping Wheloon and disposing of the Nether Scroll, Oriphaun has returned to the Storm Horns to uncover the Netherese plot in the area. Notes are scattered throughout the area by Oriphaun Huntsilver (on Heroic difficulty) and Archwizard Tyvrus (on Epic difficulty), which elaborate on the plot further. The quest chain is provided by Kara Patwin (on Heroic) and Lorant Tass (on Epic).
The Tracker's Trap sees Nevyle Dunwaite organize a meeting between the players and Oriphaun at Yarrow Glade, only to be attacked by Netherese forces. Oriphaun is captured while the players fight their way out of the ambush, overcoming the arcanist Shai on the way out. They may also aid the hermit Haurugg, who has been displaced by the invaders.
In Lines of Supply, the players head to Tumblerock Pass, sent by Rina the Keen-Blade to meet Kyra Armond there. The mission is to destroy the convoys the Netherese are using to move supplies into the mountains, potentially with the assistance of local harpies. After destroying the convoys and their escorts, the players ultimately face the enemy commander Grablandurr.
Breaking the Ranks has Orin Arroway ask the players to investigate the Netherese central camp high in the mountains. Facing waves of gnolls, orcs, hill giants, and shadar-kai, the players eventually face and defeat their leader Draeton. The dracolich Arricaxerxes observes the fighting, throwing some blasts of ice down before leaving.
In A Break In the Ice, Renton Finne sends the players to meet the frost giant Rungnir in his glacier, a former ally of the Netherese who has become rebellious. The players find that Rungnir has broken entirely with the Netherese and hidden in the depths of the glacier, and join him on an attack on his nemesis, the wizard Tharno. He proves an unreliable ally, and arrogantly turns on the players afterwards to assert control over his domain.
What Goes Up concludes the adventure, and has Sherrod Starym task the players with investigating deeper into the glacier to find Oriphaun. After finding him and freeing him, it is revealed that the grand project the Netherese are working on is a fully intact and functional mythallar buried in the glacier. Although the players partially interrupt the ritual being worked on it, the Netherese succeed in reactivating it and turning the whole glacier into a new flying enclave with which to assault Cormyr with. After breaking the enclave's flight pillars and killing Amskar, Oriphaun and the players jump off as the enclave flies out of control and smashes into a mountainside, ending the Netherese invasion plans.
