Elgred Morbide was a dragonborn lich sorcerer and necromancer who was a follower of the dracolich An'Kizhek. He attacked the Dungeon Academy and stole the keystone of the Nexus Marker, which protected the school.[2]

Description[]

His eyes were blue. He wore hooded purple robes that were ripped and covered with cobwebs and dust. His skull was exposed as much of his skin was gone,[1] and he had narrow skeletal ankles.[3] He had a buzzing voice[4] and a distinctive, piercing laugh.[5][1]

Abilities[]

He was able to use a staff to control skeletal creatures and produce huge vortices of bones. He could assemble bones into bone golems.[6] and create many portals.[7] He could also use magic to create and control blue chains that were as cold as ice.[8] He moved by gliding.[9] He was also experienced with alchemy.[10]

Activities[]

Shrieks and howls came from the dungeons of the tower, cries of suffering day and night.
— Tavian Truescale, describing Elgred's experiments[10]

Elgred performed repulsive experiments with undead over many years.[11][10] He lived in a tower.[10]

Relationships[]

Elgred fanatically served the dracolich An'Kizhek, along with Lord Carrion.[10] He wanted to use her undead power to control Faerûn.[12]

Tavian Truescale[]

I must listen to him. He has been my teacher and mentor all my life; he gave me the red dragon amulet so that I might become strong.
— Tavian Truescale[13]

Tavian Truescale served as Elgred's servant and spy for much of the young boy's s life.[11][10] Yet Elgred openly derided him.[14] He told Tavian that An'Kizhek would make him a prince,[15] but actually planned to feed him to her.[9] When Tavian learned of Elgred's betrayal, he declared himself the lich's sworn enemy.[16]

History[]

Elgred Morbide had once been advisor to the black dragon Cedaver, when she held a position of leadership in the school that eventually became the Dungeon Academy. Under his guidance, Cedaver split with Zxaticus, and founded the Waterdeep School for Dragons. When Cedaver discovered Elgred's secret experiments with undead, she exiled him. He continued to experiment on his own.[11]

One year, during a particularly harsh drought in a valley of the Western Heartlands, Elgred visited an insignificant village there. He sensed magical potential in a three-year-old Tavian Truescale. Tavian's parents gave the young boy over to Elgred to be his apprentice. But once he had taken Tavian to his tower, Elgred showed his true self. He forced the boy into years of cruel servitude.[10]

Elgred provided Tavian with an Amulet of True Draconic Polymorph[17], and had him trail the Danger Club to the Nexus Marker, deep within the Dungeon Academy. Meanwhile, he freed Carrion from the Dungeon Academy, and the two necromancers attacked the school with skeletons. When Tavian and the Danger Club found the keystone of the Nexus Marker, he revealed himself to them and took it for himself. He betrayed Tavian, who used the Amulet of True Draconic Polymorph to become a bronze dragon and attacked him. Elgred announced his grand plans with An'Kizhek and created a portal to escape through. Bauble the mimic turned itself into a manacle, attached itself to his ankle, and followed him through the portal.[18]
