Elli was an elderly frost giant in Jotunheim, the land of giants in the plane of Ysgard.[1][note 1]

Activities[]

She was very skilled in the art of wrestling and knew a wide variety of maneuvers.[1]

Relationships[]

Elli was the mother of Brimir, the proprietor of the famed beer-hall known as Okalnir.[1]

History[]

In the late 14th century DR, a group of adventurers from the city of Ravens Bluff journeyed to the plane of Ysgard in search of the legendary Well of Mimir, having been instructed by the city's Ministry of Art to do so in order to learn how a powerful githyanki artifact known only as the Great Machine could be destroyed.[2]

While traveling in Jotunheim, they met Habrok Icecaster and, after proving their worth to him by slaying a bulette, he brought them to the beer-hall Okalnir.[3] Brimir, sensing the giants of his hall were indifferent towards the adventurers, proposed a competition of four tests to lighten the mood. He was even willing to wager three magic items if the adventurers would wager three comparable permanent or major charged items. The items he wagered included a Svartalfheim cloak, a horn of Valhalla,[4] and a great war maul known as Grungir's hammer.[5]

The fourth and final test was to be a wrestling match. However, when the giants looked amongst themselves to choose a champion they came to conclude that it would be unfair to match the adventurers against any of their warriors. Eventually they called upon Brimir's own mother, Elli, to be the giant champion of wrestling.[1]

Background[]

The series of competitions undertaken in Three Coins in a Wheel are inspired by the Prose Edda book Gylfaginning (chapter 44), which features a series of contests in the hall of Utgard-Loki. There the Norse god Thor is forced to fight with a character named Elli. Unlike the Elli of Three Coins in a Wheel, she is said to be the nurse maid of Utgard-Loki, and rather than being a jotunn is a personification of old age itself.

Notes[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 It is not specified what race of giant Elli belongs to, but as she is said to be the mother of Brimir it can be assumed that she is likely a frost giant.
