Empathy was a minor psionic devotion that allowed a psion[1][2][4][6] or wilder[2] to perceive various surface feelings in the unshielded mind of any sentient creature.[1][4][6][7]

Effects[]

This discipline allowed a psion to detect and sense a multitude of different surface emotions,[1][4][6][7] drives,[4][6] and moods.[1][7] These could include hatred, hostility, curiosity, friendliness, love, rage, uncertainty, and the like.[1][4][6][7] It also allowed a psion to detect various sensations,[1][7] such as pain, and basic needs like fatigue, hunger, and thirst.[1][4][6][7]

Reports differed on the exact effective range of this devotion. Older accounts spoke of it being unlimited in its range, but limited to a 20 feet (6.1 meters) by 20 ft (6.1 m) area, and requiring physical contact if used against another psionicists.[4] Later accounts spoke of its range instead being centered on the caster and spreading out 30 feet (9.1 meters).[1][7]

Psionic defenses such as mind bar,[8] as well as spells like mind blank, could shield against it.[9]

Display[]

Manifesting this power produced a standard mental display.[1][7]

  • Powerful shamans of the Great Worm tribe, who worshiped Uthgar's Great Worm beast totem, were capable of assuming a "great worm" form that conferred a number of psionic abilities, including empathy.[21][22]

Notes[]

  1. Tyrangal, also known as Gaulauntyr, is described as a topaz dragon in her first appearance, the article "Wyrms of the North: The Thief Dragon" in Dragon #240 (p. 77–81). Subsequent appearances in the 3rd edition Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting (p. 220) and the novel The Edge of Chaos describe her as a copper dragon. Gaulauntyr's entry in Dragons of Faerûn (p. 150) lists her as "topaz (copper)", presumably to avoid arbitrating the conflict. As Gaulauntyr was known to disguise herself using illusions, it is possible the early topaz dragon appearance can be attributed to that. For the purposes of this wiki, Tyrangal/Gaulauntyr is considered to be a copper dragon in accordance with our canon policy.
