Eveningstar Gorge, or Starwater Gorge,[1] was a gorge in Cormyr[1][2] that was notable as being the location of the infamous Haunted Halls.[3]
Description[]
The rocky gorge[1][2] was beautiful[1] and had very steep walls.[3] The gorge was often full of mist, which flowed down from the High Moors.[3][4][5]
Geography[]
Eveningstar Gorge was located north of the town of Eveningstar, where the Starwater River broke through the Stonecliff. This allowed one of the only routes up to the dangerous Stonelands,[1][2] as it was the only gap in the Stonecliff along the entire length of the High Road from Tyrluk to Arabel.[2] The gorge was very narrow 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the town and widened as one went south.[6]
Flora & Fauna[]
The base of the gorge was covered with scrub trees and thickets,[1][2] some of which produced berries.[2] Brave children from the town played there often.[2]
Tressym, the famed winged cats, were thought to have originated in the Eveningstar region, and most of the population lived and hunted in the gorge,[2][7] keeping rodent numbers low.[2]
In the winter, wolves would migrate down from the Stonelands to the gorge to hunt, giving rise to the term "wolf winters" for particularly harsh winters in the region.[1]
Notable Locations[]
- The Haunted Halls, a dwarven keep built into the western cliff face of the gorge.[1][2]
- Old Meg's Hut, an old ruin that once was home to a hag.[6]
- Rivior's Keep, the original home of the bandit lord Rivior, for whom the Haunted Halls were built.[8]
- Redhand Pool, a small lake on the Starwater River.[9]
- Starwater River, the river that formed the gorge.[1][2]
- Thaddath farm, a ruined farm later used as a dump.[6]
