"Far Too Many Thieves" is a short story by Ed Greenwood, originally an outtake from a chapter in "Elminster: The Making of a Mage".[1]
Summary[]
After forming the Velvet Hands thieves' gang in Hastarl, the young thief Elminster Aumar discovers the dead bodies of fellow thieves Klaern Blaenbar and his brother Othkyn Blaenbar. Elminster is shocked as he never thought they'd be killing, but Farl, guild leader, sees it as practical and needful, as they had probably joined the Moonclaws, a rival gang. their comrade Jhardin did it. Overnight, the Velvet Hands are ambushed by a number of Moonclaws; though they slay many rivals, the numbers of Velvet Hands thieves are reduced.
At dawn, Farl and Elminster discover Jhardin killed in his own home, realizing the Velvet Hands are now just them, Larrin, Tarth, and Tassabra. The two decide their gang need to hide, and then find out who the Moonclaws' master is.
