A field glass was a popular export from the Shining Lands in 1367 DR.[5] It was available for purchase through Aurora's Whole Realms Catalogue.[3]
Description[]
Field glasses were used to magnify the user's vision over great distances. A field glass typically at least doubled the distance vision of any scout or lookout.[1][3][5]
History[]
A field glass was made by attaching special lenses, shaped by gnome artificers in Ormpe, to either end of a cylinder.[5] The majority of spyglasses in the Realms, as well as those of the highest quality, were constructed by gnomes.[6]
Field glasses were coveted by captains sailing both the Sea of Fallen Stars and the Sword Coast.[5]
Reputation[]
They were extremely popular among sailors on the Great Sea, allowing them to spot pirates long before the pirates even knew they were there.[1][3][5]
Notable Field Glasses[]
- Squint: an enchanted spyglass with lenses carved out of gems that belonged to Calliope in the late 15th century DR.[7]
