Folklore of Faerûn was a book that collected stories, legends, and folktales of the landlubber folk of Faerûn, published sometime before 1372 DR.[1]
Contents[]
The tome compiled traditional folk prose and ballads of Faerûn. One of the stories of note was titled Sariah and the Ocean Strider. The story was about the titular Sariah Badgeriver, who once met an ocean strider during one of her daily fishing outings. Unbeknown to her, the ocean strider claimed the river as his kingdom, despite Sariah's family living on its banks for many generations. A spirited young woman, Sariah was not about to give up her family home to a "ravenous, gargantuan fey."[1]
From there, the story branched into a number of variations, each described a different resolution of the conflict: one told a story of Sariah battling the strider to the death, while others told of how she tricked the wannabe monarch into relinquishing his claims over the river. Yet another version described a long journey Sariah Badgeriver embarked on on the ocean strider's behest in exchange for him leaving the river forever.[1]
It was unknown where the tale was truthful or which of the version was the original tale, however, all of them had one thing in common: when the story was done, Sariah ended up up possessing the ocean strider's magic scimitar, be it through trickery or as an honest boon.[1]
