A location is any distinctive and unique place within the Realms. A location can be as small as a single tree or as large as a forest or anywhere in between.
Note[]
Locations and Settlements are often intermixed, but should be separate. A settlement is anywhere folks live their day to day lives. If the place is home to someone, it's not a location, it's a settlement.
Geography[]
Realms Geography can be a bit tricky. You simply need to start at the top and work down.
- Where in the Universe is the location? If it's on the planet Toril then it goes in Category:Locations on Toril. If it is on one of the other planes of existence, then skip to the section on planar locations. Otherwise add where in the universe the location can be found.
- On what continent is the location? If it's in Faerûn then it goes in Category:Locations in Faerûn. Otherwise add the continent where the location can be found. (Kara-Tur, Maztica, Returned Abeir, Zakhara)
- Where on Faerûn is the location? Faerûn is split into eight regions: The Northeast, The Northwest, The North, The West, The Interior, The East, The Southwest, The South, and The Southeast. Cormyr is more or less in the exact middle of the Realms. A location above Cormyr on a map is in the north.
- In what large area is the location? This area description is smaller than the one above, though still huge in area. It can be hard to pin down exactly what the name of an area is, as it is not always clear. Each area covers a couple hundred miles (300 km) and is listed on the map or source book that has the location information in it. Any Forgotten Realms Campaign setting book should also have this information. Example: Anauroch.
- In what small area is the location? This area is smaller then the one above, though still quite large. Note that a small area must fit completely in a large area. A small area can be just a name given to the landscape, such as Icewind Dale or a country, such as Cormyr.
- In what tiny area is the location? Not every location will have this level of category. A tiny area is still large, at least several miles across, though it must completely fit within the small area. The King's Forest is a tiny area within the large area of Cormyr.
- In what very tiny area is the location? A very tiny area is quite small, not more than a mile across. A settlement is a very tiny area, but you can include big cities if they don't fit in the next bigger category.
- In what very, very tiny area is the location? Not every location will this level of category. Example: The Worried Wyvern inn.
