Automated way to identify no tags?[]

The proposed policy itself looks good. Regarding how to enforce it, do we have an easy automated way to see if images don't have one of the copyright tags?  SkyeNiTessine (talk · contr) 21:15, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Sadly not. It is possible to get a list of all the images on the wiki, but I can't think of anything that would refine the list according to which ones have no tag attached. Fw190a8 12:29, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

Updated guidelines for image uploads[]

Since the question arose here about this image, I thought I would write down the guidelines that I've been using and open it up for discussion. Then we might want to update this page.

Images that can be uploaded:

  1. Anything from an official Wizards of the Coast freely available art gallery, as long as the appropriate {{Information}} template is filled out, and the {{Promotional}} copyright tag is used.
  2. Sourcebook covers (front and back?) like what you see on Amazon product listings, as long as the appropriate {{Information}} template is filled out, and the {{Bookcover}} copyright tag is used.
  3. Magazine covers, same as above but use {{Magazinecover}}.
  4. Game box covers, same as above but use {{Gamecover}}.
  5. Screenshots from games, same as above but use {{Screenshot}}.
  6. Scans of maps or images that are either excerpts of a larger work (like a small section of a big map), or a reduced-quality (usually low-resolution) version of a complete image. The rationale here is to not copy anything that would be a viable substitute for the real item, thus robbing some company of potential sales. My personal guideline is to reduce the scanned image in size by at least 50% in each dimension, making it 25% of the size of the original, or less.

Images that cannot be uploaded:

  1. Scans of text, tables, or stats.
  2. Full-size/resolution copyrighted images.

Images I'm not sure about:

  1. Painted figurines. After painting, these could be considered works of art. Before painting, it's a commercial piece of art that an image cannot completely replace (so should be okay). If it is a commercial product, we should link to their site at the very least (?).

That's a quick first pass. Feel free to add more items and/or discuss. —Moviesign (talk) 22:17, March 20, 2015 (UTC)

Unofficial material - maps[]

What is the policy for adding unofficial maps (and, more generally, art)? Specifically, I have made a map of Elturel that is based on the original map from the Forgotten Realms adventures.

On one hand, I understand how there may be limitations for using fan art rather than official material, to maintain canon. On the other hand, I'm not sure what is considered canon in the case of a map - if the city's plan remains the same and the map represents all currently known information about the city (which I have tried to achieve), can it be considered to be in line with canon?

My personal opinion is hard no on maps and no on majority of fan art. But I know that folk here has convicted opinions on the matter. The Wiki already has a bunch of legacy fan maps and they need to be cleaned up/moved to gallery. Fan maps are never to be used in inboxes. -Artyom.pavlov (talk) 22:51, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
First of all, this map looks fantastic and I'll definitely be sharing it with some friends if they need a high-quality map of Elturel. However, the wiki aims to use material that is deemed canon. Canon material usually falls under that from official and licensed sources. For this reason, you cannot upload your map to the wiki. Note that we have similar official maps in the Elturel article itself. Cheers for understanding! ~ Possessed Priest (talk) 23:24, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
