Do we have an article on Calishite naming conventions? I saw Dhusarra yr Fadila el Abhuk got renamed to Dhusarra el Abhuk, but I didn't know exactly why. I did a quick search and didn't see anything useful except the Alzhedo dictionary which answered my question, sort of. I, for one, would like to request such an article from the Al-Qadim and Lands of Intrigue fans out there. Something that can answer questions like:
  • How were names chosen?
  • Were there different conventions for males and females?
  • How were names presented or expressed, in daily life and in formal settings?
  • When two prominent families intermarried, what happened to the names?
  • How were names related to the heraldry of the region?
  • What was the proper way to address the various ranks of various groups (religious, political, mercantile, military, arcane, etc.)? Put another way, how were titles used?
  • What formalities were observed when addressing someone of higher, lower, or equal status?

I don't know if any of this information exists, but I'm certain I'm not the only one who is curious. Any takers? :)

I wrote the Alzhedo dictionary and the Syl-pasha and Annuv articles, so I can handle this. Most of your questions are covered in Empires of the Shining Sea.

What should I name the article? And what should link to it?

I was thinking we should add a "Culture" section to the standard sections for the {{Location}} template. Some articles already have one, Chessenta for instance. If the information pertains only to that Location, then we're done. But, if the same info applies to multiple locations (like Amn, Calimshan, and Tethyr perhaps) then we could use the {{Main}} template in the Culture section to point to a Culture of the Lands of Intrigue article (name negotiable) and then note any tidbits unique to the Location being described. Let's give others a chance to respond, they may have better ideas.

I love the idea of having a "Culture" standard section. I think it would be fitting to have such a section added to ethnicity articles also. (We don't really have many of those yet, but it's a future project of mine after I work through all the languages.)

In general, I think we should be using {{Main}} more often than we do. I find myself repeating shared history constantly, for example.

I've also been thinking how such pages as History of Calimshan or Culture of the Lands of Intrigue could also be subpages of the broader articles. For example, Calimshan could have a "History" section with a sweeping overview of its history and a {{Main}} linking to Calimshan/History. In other words, anytime an article is titled "Foo of Bar", it might make more sense to put it under "Bar/Foo".

(I actually intend to do the same sort of thing for the wards of Calimport. See Calimport#Organization. I'd recommend moving the ward pages for Waterdeep into such an organization as well. Subpages keep things better connected, with automatic back-links to the parent articles. As a rule, I think that overly long articles become a little obnoxious, so anything we can do to sub-divide helps.)

Back on topic, in the case of Calishite naming conventions, that strikes me as a sub-topic of Culture of Calimshan. I think I'll start on the naming conventions page today. We can rename it or move it or merge it as we see fit in the future easily enough. Culture of Calimshan as a whole will be a much larger project.

Interesting idea... Calimport/Shackles Ward... not sure how I feel about it, but I think we need more consensus before implementing your idea from other editors :)

certainly!

I have one small, obscure, and technical objection to subpages. In scripts, subpages don't match a title search. "Shackles Ward" does not show up if you search for pages that start with "Sha". If you include redirects, then yes, you get both Shackles Ward and Shackles Ward of Calimport in the results. (As an aside, I would delete the latter as being redundant.) This will rarely be an issue, but it would complicate things if it happens. However, this is not a strong reason against using subpages, I just wanted to make it known.
