Forums: Helping Hand > Citing from novels

Use the following template for a nicely presented post:

Hi. I want to bring this into consideration before making a formal request. Wouldn't be better to cite chapters of the novels instead of page numbers? I know that would be a hell of work for the people making the wikicode, but would make our lives easier when referencing events from novels.

I mean, novels came in different formats, and those formats have different criteria for how to number a novel. So, people get confused when they are searching page numbers (I guess this is a good example of what I'm talking about: Talk: Kepeshkmolik Tarhun). Referencing a chapter instead will be less confusing.

Anyhow, I like to know what you guys think about this.

We generally make sub-templates for different media. See Template:Cite book/The Ghost King, for example, where you will see a Hardcover and an MMP sub-template. I think there are some "Kindle" templates somewhere too. Any template that calls {{Cite book}} can accept the chapter parameter, but most old templates need to be updated to add that parameter (see Template:Cite_book#Usage). I recommend adding both the page and the chapter when citing books that have sub-templates. That way, regardless of what media the reader has, they have a chance to locate the event in the text. Of course, eBooks allow searching, so I'm not too worried about those folks—they will find it if they really want to—but the more information we provide, the better.

I just noticed that {{Cite digital book}} doesn't have the chapter parameter, which is a big oversight on my part. I will fix this tonight.

Okay, the {{Cite digital book}} has been rewritten and will take the chapter parameter now. The digital book templates are not perfect, but they are at least functional and also grok chapter so, hopefully, future templates will be correct. I'm still working on the documentation. Let me know if you have any questions.
