Use the following template for a nicely presented post:

Hello everyone,

I have been working on a navbox for dragons in my Sandbox. It currently looks like this:

True dragons
Metallic: GoldSilverBronzeCopperBrassIronPlatinumSteel
Chromatic: RedBlackBlueGreenWhiteBrownGrayPurple
Gem: AmethystEmeraldSapphireTopazCrystal
Lung: Chiang lung
Planar: AstralFaerieShadow
Miscellaneous: BrainstealerPrismaticRadiantSongVishap

Related creatures

There is an insanely high number of different dragons in D&D literature, which is expected, and not all of them are necessarily relevant to the Realms. For that reason I tried to keep only the types whose existence is mentioned (directly or indirectly) in FR sources, also to minimize the number of red links in the navbox.

For example, I didn't include all types of drake, but only those that I saw being specifically mentioned somewhere.

Now, my FR knowledge is limited to the sourcebooks, and even when checking those some type may have slipped up. Should any more types of dragons be included? Should any be removed?

Also, I made a design choice here by making the subsections collapsible, but expanded by default. My original idea was to program it to only expand the section that contains the type of dragon being linked to in the page this template is invoked (for example, it would leave only the True dragons section open in the gold dragon page, the Related creatures would be expanded in the dracolich page, and so on). However, I have no idea how to code that and a superficial Google search turned out empty. If anybody knows how to do this, I think it would look pretty cool.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I like it.

Our policy is to comment out red links in navboxes. They can be uncommented when the pages are added.

I think I could probably code up the collapsiblity that you describe, but I wouldn't be able to get to it till the weekend.

Don't forget about lung dragons! :) I believe they are a type of true dragon.

Yes, they are.

I think the easiest way to implement the "leave one expanded" feature would be to add an argument to the template call and choose the expanded selection based on the value of the parameter. If no parameter is specified, all blocks start out collapsed. Lhynard gets first dibs on writing the code, in case he wants to try something fancier :)

Thanks Ir'revrykal, I would like to see those here, too! Maybe this is the place to raise the question: Are they indeed called "lung dragons" in newer sources? I know them as "oriental dragons" (e.g. from Monstrous Compendium Forgotten Realms Appendix (MC3), where they are fully described). The latter name may have the disadvantage of being western- (i.e. Faerûnian-)centric. But to my understanding lung is the Chinese (High Shou) word for dragon (thus e.g. li lung means earth dragon), so lung dragon would be dragon dragon, right? And I'm not really happy with that.

Ah, and of course I like the template!

Yes, in the "Index of Dragons" in the 2nd appendix of the 3e Draconomicon: The Book of Dragons, they are explicitly categorized as Lung dragons.

I understand your frustration at this; here in the States we have a restaurant called Panera Bread, which is one of my favorite quick places to grab a bite—but Bread Bread? seriously?

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I've added links to all the oriental dragons that I could find and commented out the redlinks to ready the template for implementation. Check the linked template on the first post on this thread to see the changes.

I'll go through my sources one more time to see if there is any dragon that I missed and then I'll implement the template throughout the dragon pages.

Then it should be ready for some of Lhynard's and Moviesign's programming magic. :)

I'm a bit late here but I think zekyl, zar'ithra, and draconic creatures are missing.

By the way, I think your navboxes are fantastic.

I'm sorry for the late post.

Magic complete. Let me know if you see any problems.

Ah, so that's how it's done. Amazing work! It seems to be working perfectly throughout the pages.

On another note: it now seems that the {{Draconic humanoids}} navbox is no longer necessary, since it has become redundant (and was already quite incomplete anyway). Should we remove it from the pages?

Sirwhiteout (talk) 23:38, June 22, 2018 (UTC)

I vote yes.
