I've seen many people say, " This is where to start, ____ "

No, " This is where to start, _____ " Nah, " This, this is where to start, _____ "

Where do I start? (Talk) 2015-11-23T14:23:39

To clarify, are you asking about where to start reading among all of the Forgotten Realms novels?

Same question just popped up over on Candlekeep. So I assume he's asking about reading the novels.

There is nowhere you need to start, because there is relatively little ongoing story. Just dive right in, pick up whatever you find that looks interesting, and explore the Realms from the inside, which is really the most appropriate way to discover the Realms. I'm sure you'll pick it up easily. The only provisos are to begin with the first book of any given trilogy, and probably read anything by R. A. Salvatore in order, because he just keeps feeding on his older books.

I think I found the first novel in the Forgotten Realms, but as badcatman says above, you only need to start on a series, and not from book one. The book I believe was called Darkwalker on Moonshae by Douglas Niles, the Moonshae (sourcebook) claims it was the first novel in the realms. The second made was The Crystal Shard, which is about the fourth book of the Legend of Drizzt by R. A. Salvatore. I would say it would be safe to start with Drizzt and then branch off to other series.
