Prologue ~ Chapter 1 ~ Chapter 2 ~ Chapter 3

OoC Forum

Question: Who's where in the line up of the caravan? Who's in a wagon or mounted or whatnot and who isn't? (Obviously, I know that Juniper, Samophlange, and Korr are in (or on top of) wagons, but beyond that?)
~ Lhynard (talk) 13:01, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

OOC: Juniper would be somewhere at the head of the caravan. On top of the wagon.

Ilrien is somewhere by the middle/front, along the edge of the caravan.

SilverTiger12 (talk) 13:52, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

Part of my question is toward BCM. I think we've all been assumming that this is a wagon caravan, since Blaz is said to be in one, but I don't know if there are other animals or vehicles in the line or how long it is, just that it is a "motley band".

In any case, Brace is probably in the same wagon as Korr, shoved in the back with the stuff rather than on a seat, if that's allowed.

~ Lhynard (talk) 19:48, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

Closer to the turnips! Smart!

The turnips are in the wagon in front of the Splitbark brothers, as I understood it. Remember that the gnome spilled one out of his wagon that the Splitbark wagon ran over.
~ Lhynard (talk) 20:51, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

Tisk tisk. Hiding your turnip loot from the party already.

I'm making up/winging this part; it's not in the module. But I've presumed a line of only a dozen vehicles: wagons, carts, pack animals, riders. If you don't have a mount (no PC does), then you're walking or hitching a ride on a wagon. The PCs will be close to the front, where the action will be, unless for some reason you want to be in the rear or join late. From what we've got, order of posting, and how wrong you're getting the message, the lead is the Merrymar covered wagon. Next is the turnip wagon with Samo. Third is a wagon with Brace and Korr. Ilrien seems to hiking behind them. Juniper I've pictured sitting on top of a covered wagon, maybe Blaz's? How's that?
BadCatMan (talk) 11:56, 17 September 2021 (UTC)

works for me; thanks; that helps a lot
~ Lhynard (talk) 13:46, 17 September 2021 (UTC)

Works for me too. And yes, Korr is in a very "tactical" position behind the turnip wagon!
Possessed Priest (talk) 17:25, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

Are there non-merchant civilians in this caravan? If so, are they in wagons and where in the line?
~ Lhynard (talk) 00:55, 20 September 2021 (UTC)

Yes, walkers, riders, and those hitching on wagons. They're further down the line, behind the PCs, so the fourth and back.
BadCatMan (talk) 01:55, 20 September 2021 (UTC)

I rolled initiative for you, as I find it saves a lot of time in play-by-post. I may do that for other rolls in future. Anyway, here is the initiative list and the system I use. I divide the initiative list up into batches, so you can post somewhat out of order within your batch, and I don't have to cover all the NPCs at once. Currently, only Ilrien may act, though the rest of you may post a reaction if you wish, if it doesn't affect combat. Then Gvrag the bugbear and the regular goblins will act. Then Samo, Korr, and Brace may act in any order. And so on. When Maegraunn and Ruf's character are ready, I'll insert them into the initiative list. I hope that makes sense. Ask away if you have any questions. BTW, Gvrag is grappling Blaz and uses his as soft cover. He's not able to coup de grace him. I've also slightly altered the scene from what the artwork shows; there is no overturned cart and the two other goblins are further away.
BadCatMan (talk) 12:36, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
Initiative
  1. 21 - Ilrien
  2. 21 - Gvrag
  3. 20 - Goblins
  4. 17 - Samo
  5. 17 - Korr
  6. 15 - Brace
  7. 15 - Skar
  8. 4 - Juniper

Grumble grumble.

Questions:

  • Do the wagons have windows? Or is Brace only hearing everything, not seeing it?
  • How far, in feet, is Gvrag from the back of wagon #3?
  • Skar is considered in a space adjacent to Gvrag, correct?

(I'm not used to playing without a grid, and distances are super important for my character.)

~ Lhynard (talk) 22:16, 21 September 2021 (UTC)

I mean we could make a grid and tactical map and just share the image with movement updates via slack..

Answers:
  • Based on what we've described: Blaz's wagon is covered and walled, with a door on the back. The turnip wagon is open, since the turnips can bounce out. Brace and Korr's wagon can be as you like. Depends how much apothecary equipment and supplies you're carrying, I guess. (Does someone want to make us a wagon article?)
  • Correct.
Every time I try to do without battle-maps... Alright, I'll knock something up for my next update.
BadCatMan (talk) 00:53, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

Don't feel pressured to make maps if it doesn't seem necessary! If I know distances, I can make decisions, too. (I might make a wagon article. I was actually thinking about it a while ago.)
~ Lhynard (talk) 01:27, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

~ Lhynard (talk) 04:49, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

Goblins #1 and #2 delayed, just to break up the batch a bit. At this point, as Ilrien is up after Juniper, I'll allow her to act as well, before my next update.

Okay, sunstroke (I assume from Sandstorm) seems to be a rather strong spell. In fact, Spell Compendium replaced it with heatstroke, nigh-identical but a 3rd-level Druid spell. I'll allow it this time, but Juniper may want to look for a new spell later on. :) Though the spell doesn't do half damage on a save (the "partial" refers to its mixed effects), I'll run with that now to balance it out.
BadCatMan (talk) 12:02, 23 September 2021 (UTC)

Don't they play test their materials? What's "mixed effects"? the book doesn't say.

Although keeping this all in black-and-white has a certain artistic appeal, I've added color-coding to the battlemap to better distinguish PCs and NPCs, and horses.

Since level 1 is more lethal than light, I suggest grouping together to protect each other and avoid being flanked again. And don't forget you can use the horses and wagons tactically: stand on top to get the advantage of height or get out of the way, or hide underneath to escape (easy for the Small characters).

"Mixed effects" was just my description. The "Fortitude partial" in the sunstroke spell means that, even if you succeed on the Fortitude save, you still take part of the spell's effects, that is, the nonlethal damage. Hence, partial.
BadCatMan (talk) 03:43, 25 September 2021 (UTC)
By the way, it might be good to start noting your hit-point totals in your posts, as a handy record for me and so others have an idea if you're in danger.

"…then reached a lanky arm up for the shutter. Soon, grubby yellowish fingers curled around the roof of the wagon."

Which wagons are covered and which ones are not? I at first thought all were covered, since Juniper was on the roof, but then I thought that they weren't covered, since people were getting out of them so easily. Now, I am thinking that there is a mix?
~ Lhynard (talk) 11:19, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

So, goblin 1 is on F11? Is skar considered to be grappling Ilrien? in C15?
~ Lhynard (talk) 11:27, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

There's a mix of types. I listed them above: "the lead is the Merrymar covered wagon. Next is the turnip wagon with Samo. Third is a wagon with Brace and Korr. Ilrien seems to hiking behind them. Juniper I've pictured sitting on top of a covered wagon, maybe Blaz's?" Blaz's wagon has wooden sides (with his face painted on them) and roof (with Juniper on top). The turnip wagon is open and low, full of turnips, maybe covered with canvas. Since Ilrien is unconscious, Skar doesn't need to grapple Ilrien. He also hasn't moved her significantly, just enough to have her head in range, so they're in the same squares. Goblin #1 is moving upward, he'll arrive in F11 next round.

  8. 15 - Goblin #1 and #2 (unconscious, bleeding)
  9. 4 - Juniper
If the party chooses to pursue Goblin #1, now named Lek, then Juniper and the rest of the party except Ilrien are up next. If you choose to let him go, then the battle is over and Ilrien becomes conscious at 0 hitpoints.

  6. 15 - Brace
  7. 15 - Skar (unconscious)
  8. 15 - Goblin #1 and #2 (unconscious, stabilized)
  9. 4 - Juniper
Looks like battle is over then. :) The PCs get 320 XP each, for Skar, one bugbear, and four goblins. For loot, the following is available, though not necessarily worth much: Ammunition (arrows and bolts) that misses has a 50% chance of being recoverable, if you want to count your shots and go looking.
BadCatMan (talk) 07:26, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

For dealing with the bodies, you could just pull them off the road, cover them, and notify the authorities in Loudwater or the next patrol you encounter, so they can send a team to deal with them, look for evidence, burn or bury them, etc. That seems easiest and I can't imagine that disposing of bodies or using improper burial rites or none at all would be well accepted. However, I'll note that, except the bugbear, none of the goblins are actually dead yet, just unconscious and bleeding out.

Using Brace's tonandurr idea, with time in the forest you can make a Survival check DC 15 to find a tree, with +2 circumstance bonus from Brace's recognition and anything else you can pull out. It will heal 1 hp (same as a cure minor wounds) for all except Ilrien, sorry.
BadCatMan (talk) 02:45, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

Don't you lose 1 HP per round in v.3.5, unless you get really lucky and stabilize? I figured that well over a minute has passed already. Or did they all stabilize?

Which of the three did Juniper tie up?
~ Lhynard (talk) 03:26, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

Yes, that's them bleeding out. Okay, let's see, Skar is unconscious but fine, Goblin #2 stabilized, while #3 and #4 will die without care. As for time passed, first aid is only a standard action, just a few seconds, which is unfeasibly fast, and you made a good few attempts already. Juniper has had time to bind some goblins, which takes a minute. So, about two minutes have passed and Juniper finds #3 and #4 have already died after she's bound Skar and #2.
BadCatMan (talk) 03:43, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

I'm guessing that Juniper needs to roll a couple Use rope checks?
~ Lhynard (talk) 22:58, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

I am guessing that it takes Brace up to an hour to find the bark? So, don't feel the need to wait on him to have conversation, unless anyone with good Survival or Knowledge (nature) or Profession (herbalist) wants to go help him.
~ Lhynard (talk) 23:03, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

If you need Use Rope rolls: #1 - 16+3 (gobbo) and #2 - 10+3 (gobbo Skar)

Thanks, but Use Rope checks are for the DM to roll, so you don't know how well you did in knot-tying. You'll find out if there's an escape attempt. ;) For finding the tonandurr tree, I'd like to do something with that, so I'll ask you to wait for a bit. After all, wandering alone through a forest that might have an escaped goblin bandit still hanging around, or worse, may be more hazardous to your health. ;) In any case, it will be easier if Brace is present during any plot-relevant conversations.
BadCatMan (talk) 03:42, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

Fair enough on all counts.

Can one of the PCs please call Brace back before he stupidly goes into the woods by himself?
~ Lhynard (talk) 04:02, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

That'd be meta-gaming :P

As far as I can see, Brace hasn't wandered off just yet. :)
BadCatMan (talk) 04:57, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

(Untrained?) Knowledge check: 6 + 3 (+2 potential circumstance bonus) = 9 (+2 possible bonus for being a merchant) to recognize "Sweetwater Traders"
(Untrained?) Knowledge check: 14 + 3 (+2 potential circumstance bonus) = 17 (+2 possible bonus for being a merchant) to recognize "Red Boar Trading Coster"
~ Lhynard (talk) 14:06, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

Typical PCs, focusing on the least important parts. :p These aren't really relevant to the current adventure, but will come up later, though you might find some evidence of Sweetwater as proof you're on the right trail maybe. I've created an article for Sweetwater that covers the basics you could be aware of. You might have heard of it while passing through the Delimbiyr Vale or would recognise its symbol if you saw it. I'll save the Red Boar Trading Coster for now, but you'd know them to be a wealthy coster based in Loudwater who have a small army in private security so they can avoid bandit raids.
BadCatMan (talk) 12:39, 14 October 2021 (UTC)

Hey, I like details! I also don't like to assume that, just because I know or don't know something, my character knows or doesn't know something.
~ Lhynard (talk) 15:08, 14 October 2021 (UTC)

Alright, I moved us forward to the campsite. Feel free to talk amongst yourselves or wrap up for the day and detail any last actions. Do you want to interrogate the goblin prisoners? Korr, do you have any spells left to convert to cure light or cure minor?
BadCatMan (talk) 11:03, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

I've already used my level 1 slots, but I'll use spontaneous casting for my orisons for myself and Ilrien, now that we've settled down and trouble is out the way!
Possessed Priest (talk) 01:25, 19 October 2021 (UTC)

Having dipped my hands in and doused myself with liquid nitrogen, I say it'll take a lot more cold than a ray of frost to freeze a body part solid, and snapping or shattering one is unlikely. Imagine snapping a frozen sausage or other piece of meat. :)
BadCatMan (talk) 14:27, 22 October 2021 (UTC)

And now we're on the trail! Please decide your marching order and make any plans you think necessary. And someone can roll a Search check for finding the trail.
BadCatMan (talk) 10:22, 27 October 2021 (UTC)

Juniper would be somewhere closer to the back. One before the last maybe.

Brace would follow behind Korr, wherever he is, though he would also probably wonder off to the sides a bunch, looking at plants and things.
~ Lhynard (talk) 14:25, 27 October 2021 (UTC)

Brace took the bugbear's leather armor and one of the small light crossbows. (I know that there is a −2 penalty for his using it.) I think that one of the other little characters grabbed one also. How do we want to divide the bolts?
~ Lhynard (talk) 16:33, 27 October 2021 (UTC)

DM, are we tracking food? Should I dock 1 rations for the first night? Or was there a collective supply of food for the caravan?
~ Lhynard (talk) 16:40, 27 October 2021 (UTC)

Samophlange picked up one goblin light crossbow and 0 bolts.
Ir'revrykal (talk) 18:32, 27 October 2021 (UTC)

Brace will take 10 of the 11 then.
~ Lhynard (talk) 19:01, 27 October 2021 (UTC)

I don't want to get bogged down in bookkeeping and rarely see rations tracked anyway. So, on short, straightforward treks I wouldn't worry about rations, so long as you have some on your sheet. Whatever you have, you replenish in a few days when you get to town. If it's a long journey away from civilization or a survival-type situation, then we'd count rations.
BadCatMan (talk) 01:31, 28 October 2021 (UTC)

Alright, the traveling order is, first to last or thereabouts: Samo, Korr, Brace, Juniper, Ilrien? In any case, we're here at the tree. I'll detail how the tonandurr bark branches will work later. First, we'll see what Brace does for a living. :)
BadCatMan (talk) 14:35, 29 October 2021 (UTC)

For entertaining Feythrin, the book says Perform (sing or comedy) DC 15, and I can give bonuses for quality of RP and making the grig laugh. For more of a variety show, I will widen the options: any kind of Perform check and act. So, juggling, magic show, oratory, storytelling, martial arts, anything's possible (Complete Warrior introduces a Perform skill for weapons demonstration for the more martially inclined). You can of course Aid Another for a joint performance, and you can make multiple attempts (one per PC).
BadCatMan (talk) 01:26, 6 November 2021 (UTC)

Who all is still not at full health? (not counting Ilrien)
~ Lhynard (talk) 23:03, 9 November 2021 (UTC)

No-one? We had a long rest.

A night's rest only heals one HP per level in 3e. We all only healed 1 HP. The game isn't absurdly overpowered like in 5e. :P
~ Lhynard (talk) 00:08, 10 November 2021 (UTC)

First you get all spells in the multiverse, then you dont heal. What lunacy is this?!

It's worth noting that you heal nonlethal damage "at the rate of 1 hit point per hour per character level" (v.3.5 PHB, p. 146). As such, Samophlange should now be at full health despite suffering 4 points of nonlethal damage in the goblin bandit scuffle.
Ir'revrykal (talk) 07:51, 10 November 2021 (UTC)

Right, and Juniper's was non-lethal too, right? I think that Brace might be the only one injured still.
~ Lhynard (talk) 13:57, 10 November 2021 (UTC)

She just twisted her ankle.

Yes, in 3e, eight hours' rest gets you only 1 hp per level, and a full 24 hours in bed only heals twice that. The healing rules are detailed here. Juniper's falling damage was only nonlethal, so that's fully healed, at least.

Brace makes six non-magical, let's call them, bandages of cure minor wounds. They cure 1 hp per wound treated. That is, if you take an arrow to the knee, put a bandage on it, you heal 1 hp. But you can't put a second bandage on it, so it won't work a second time, unless you treat a cut to the arm. As the tonandurr lore says, it won't work on elves, sorry Ilrien, but Korr can reserve a spontaneous cure minor wounds for you.
BadCatMan (talk) 08:00, 12 November 2021 (UTC)

Korr was on 8 HP, and so applied two bandages to himself (one to his knee, one to his chest). He has now fully recovered! Korr is willing to treat Ilrien is she needs it.
Possessed Priest (talk) 10:15, 12 November 2021 (UTC)

Ilrien is at 3/5 hit points, as I recall.

Are we doing Samo, Korr, Brace, Juniper, Ilrien again as we walk the remaining 5 miles? I agree with Tiger that we don't need to bother with stealth until we get closer.
~ Lhynard (talk) 00:07, 16 November 2021 (UTC)

Sounds good to me!
Possessed Priest (talk) 00:13, 16 November 2021 (UTC)

Based on the last entries, it looks like it was actually Samo, Juniper, Korr, Brace, Ilrien, until Brace stepped away.
~ Lhynard (talk) 04:16, 17 November 2021 (UTC)

Samo is still positively thrilled to be taking point.
Ir'revrykal (talk) 08:57, 17 November 2021 (UTC)

Korr and Brace are following after Samo, and I'm assuming the rest of the party are too.
Possessed Priest (talk) 17:24, 21 November 2021 (UTC)

Can we see or hear the river trib. right now, at the second pit? I'm trying to orient myself.
~ Lhynard (talk) 13:56, 25 November 2021 (UTC)

Yes, it's louder and closer now, about 70 feet to the south-west of the hole. I'll add a map shortly, though it won't show the river yet.
BadCatMan (talk) 14:37, 25 November 2021 (UTC)

The cliff is 20 feet high. The Climb check is DC 13. With a successful Climb check, you climb down 1/4 your speed: 7.5 feet if you're Medium, 5 feet if you're Small, in one move action, so twice that if you spend the whole round climbing (as I'm assuming). Or you can just fall. :) The other options for the Climb skill apply as normal. You may try to catch those who fall or catch yourself (both Climb DC 23, it's hard).

https://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/climb.htm
I will point out that the 50 ft of rope and grappling hook Juniper has would've come in handy here. :D That is, Climb DC 5. Since Korr hasn't moved yet, maybe he can find it and set it up.

Falling gets you 2 damage, fortunately.

You lose Dexterity to AC while climbing.

I'll track initiative and distance climbed together.

BadCatMan (talk) 07:55, 11 December 2021 (UTC)

Copied from chat for posterity:

Wait, didn't Juniper use her rope to tie up the goblins? Yes, she did, so never mind that.

I overlooked something: when climbing the cliff in a normal situation, you would likely Take 10 to do it safely. It's only when pressed or threatened (such as while being shot at) that it would come down to your die roll. Even with Climb 12 vs DC 13, Brace would've moved slowly but safely, convincing the others it was safe, before the goblins started shooting. So, I'll revise my post and add more distance to your tallies.

Initiative
  1. 23 - Juniper, at bottom
  2. 21 - Brace, at bottom
  3. 19 - Ilrien, 15 ft
  4. 16 - Korrlan, not climbed yet
  5. 10 - Samo, at bottom
  6. 7 - Goblins
Okay, to pilot the raft, one PC will need to make Wisdom or Profession (sailor) checks, DC 15. In your case, that's likely Korrlan on Wisdom, followed by Brace and Juniper (or maybe not Juniper?). Other PCs may Aid Another, albeit with Strength checks, DC 10. The raft will move downriver at a speed of 20 feet, or 40 feet in a round assuming a double-move, determined by the current. You just have to maintain control. Describe your actions, and I'll work out the outcome and give the progress.

Samophlange has acquired a masterwork Small-sized alchemical silver shortsword (+1 attack, 1d4−1 damage, 1 lb), bearing the mark of the Red Boar Trading Coster and potential plot baggage.

Other items obtained are: an empty bone scroll case (taken by Korrlan), a vial of alchemist's fire and five tindertwigs (taken by Brace), ten alchemical silver crossbow bolts, and assorted mundane goblin-used armors and weapons, detailed above, for anyone who has need.

Initiatives for the Tragedy's Grotto battle. Since it came out as PCs followed by NPCs and the ghost will be more-or-less uninvolved, feel free to act at your convenience, but be mindful it won't disrupt someone above you in the list.
Initiative
  1. 23 – Juniper
  2. 19 – Ilrien
  3. 15 – Samophlange
  4. 15 – Brace
  5. 14 – Korrlan
  6. 10 – Ghost
  7. 9 – Taman
  8. 6 – Badger Folk
  9. 2 – Douver, Eman, & Kars
And for a full year of good role-play, not to mention patience, have 200 XP each!
