Hiya,

I've been running a game in Faerun that's extended off the back of Lost Mines of Phandelver, set in 1491DR. Without getting into WAY too much detail, I much prefer to use canon NPCs and lore to advance the campaign, which has now progressed to level 8, and are reaching the point where some significant world events in their storyline are starting to unfold and lead them towards endgame later on (which isn't canon, but threads elements in).

I need a known (at least by the Lords and/or Harpers) canonical individual who is isolated from the rest of Faerun and barking mad, or APPEARS sane at the very least, but is troubled. Ideally they are somewhere on the Sword Coast, Underdark, or Toril, and they should be suspicious but not necessarily evil.

You can't go wrong with the Mad Mage himself: Halaster Blackcloak, who resides in Undermountain beneath Waterdeep. Although barking mad, he is extremely intelligent and can appear lucid and even reasonable if the situation calls for it (or if it amuses him).

Other notable madmen as of the 1490s:

• Izhkin, a crazy derro in the Underdark beneath the Sword Coast who has an imaginary skeleton friend named "Golgamann"
• The Pudding King, an insane deep gnome cult leader in Blingdenstone in the Underdark
• Oreioth, an insane necromancer who lives in a cave near Red Larch

Other than that, pretty much any cultist of entities like Juiblex, Ghaunadaur, and Tharizdun could be described as mad. The balor demon Belaphoss also specialized in driving his followers mad.
