Use the following template for a nicely presented post:

I don't know why this didn't occur to me much earlier, but if we are providing page numbers for sources in novels, they are dependent on which edition of the novel is being used. For example, page 10 of the hardcover edition won't contain the same text as page 10 of the equivalent paperback – that text is more than likely to be on a different page.

To solve this, I propose that each novel template, for example "Cite book/Cormyr: A Novel", has its own set of subtemplates, for example "Cite book/Cormyr: A Novel/Paperback" and "Cite book/Cormyr: A Novel/Hardcover" so that it's easy to specify which edition is being cited, and the page numbers will make sense.

Also, but this is quite drastic, I think that the old template should be changed, so that it won't allow an editor to use it unless an edition is specified. So, when someone uses "Cite book/Cormyr: A Novel" without giving the edition, it will display "Warning: edition not specified" or similar text. This will have the short-term downside of affecting all the existing citations for novels, but the advantage that new editors will immediately see that using a novel citation without an edition is not valid.

I just came here to update both links to the templates that ended up being made. It looks like this ended up being standard practice anyway.
