I'm reaching out to see if your community would like to be a part of a versus tournament we're hosting on the Shadow of Mordor wikia. It would go live in September, and we would be pitting Drizzt Do'Urden against Talion from Shadow of Mordor. The voting would live in a blog on Shadow of Mordor and we would post a button on Drizzt Do'Urden's page here encouraging your community to vote for them. On the voting blog we would link back to your wikia, and we'll be promoting the tournament around Wikia. If your community would like to be a part of the tournament, which would include the button on Drizzt Do'Urden's page as well as a link back to your community from the voting blog, please let me know by 8/29.
Thank you! Mark (talk) 21:55, August 25, 2014 (UTC)
I've seen these popularity contest thingeys before; I don't really see the point, myself, but it would be good to raise awareness of our wiki and get it more involved in cross-wiki events. Fortunately, I've already got the Drizzt page cleaned up (well, at least I did). Frankly, I think it's no contest. :) So, before I say yes, does anyone have any objections or feelings?
There wiki has 145 pages and 435 forum pages and Mark here has like 3,4K edits on it... The issue has not been raised on there wiki, I think the contest will be useful for both wikis... I would also like to add that there is a tone of Drizzt images that can be made... and maybe even videos (Just take the points of the games that he's in). But I'm guessing that we don't need more images or videos but wanted to put it out there. I vote yes.
Our wiki is not primarily focused on video games (although there have been significant contributions lately by Terrorblades, EnergyX, and Dark T) so I don't know how our mostly-text article on Drizzt will be received by the twitchy community :) so adding more images/videos to the gallery might make it more appealing to that demographic. My main concern is that competition tends to bring out the trash talk, etc. I hope they are good sports and don't vandalize the page for giggles. Likewise, I hope none of our readers turn troll. Also, we might want to consider what Featured Article we are presenting next month, and perhaps throw some more Featured Images in the September pot.
Our page views have been increasing lately (based on my irregular, casual checking of the stats) and in the past 7 days we have averaged almost 66K page views per day. It will be interesting to see what the numbers are like in Sept. during the contest.
I think a cross-wiki event sounds like a good way of getting others involved in the wiki and may help clean up our gaming pages (which are still some of our most popular, it seems). I concur with Moviesign about being on guard with a surge in mordor trolls....I hear they are even active in broad daylight. I might try and spruce up Maerimydra for a featured article nomination but there are already some great ones to choose from and Menzoberranzan might be a better fit. I suggest maybe we try and get an Item in there though...we lack a decent article for one.
P.S. 66k per day! Wow. Where do you view these stats Movie? Sounds fascinating.
Trolls... activity has been down in the last two years... I agree with BadCat and Movie... contests... blah... but I agree with Movie... we have had a lot of activity, including Mr. Gender... I have nothing against him, but it is really hard to find trolls when an unknown user makes 70 edits in one day *DW grumbles* Anyway, I am game... but I will be on active troll watch... Eli, that Maerimydra page is pretty good, BTW :) Personalty, with Twinkle and his frost blade... no contest against a wraith.
If vandalism is a problem, we could always lock the Drizzt page for editing. It could be restricted to only logged-in users or to admins, making it fairly safe and it shouldn't affect this button thing. I don't expect we'll see any significant rise, though. As a competition, it's pretty low stakes. And, I dunno, one of the most beloved fantasy characters of 27 years, versus the player-character of a game not even released yet... It's an attention-getter for the new wiki and game, but I doubt Drizzt is in any danger. :)
I could bump my ads on the WotC and Candlekeep forums, and promote this so-called tournament among the army of FR fans. :) We could even squeeze a notice on the main page to draw attention to the tournament.
It shouldn't be hard to get more pictures in September Featured Images. As for the Featured Article, since September is your own World Tree cosmology, Moviesign, I'll leave moving it up to you. :)
Eli, after your sterling City of the Spider Queen work, I'd love to see you do up Maerimydra. A complete drow city would make a fine feature article. Menzoberranzan I think is one that's too well detailed and well known, so giving a complete picture would be too massive an undertaking, like Drizzt, Waterdeep, etc. (An irony of this kind of wiki is that the most important parts are never finished.)
Terrorblades: I imagine the Dark Alliance games would have some good videos of Drizzt. His other game-play appearances (Baldur's Gate) are too low-res to be particularly interesting, AFAIK.
2 things: What are the rules to this competition? If its just a old fashioned popularity contest (Press button for Drizzt type thing), then maybe we should not think of drizzt as the only thing being rated, think some voters will also rate the drizzt page by the pages that it links to, like Twinkle and Guenhwyvar. These pages have no real room on Drizzt page but is part of him. So that when researching Drizzt, his page will be a master peace but the linked pages will also have to be good or his page will seam less impressive... I don't know how to express my self any better but I hope my thought came through.
And second should we do something about the list of books and games? Other wiki's have like a box with a scrolling side bar... I don't really like that solution but... its something. ps. Agreed on the truckloads of gender category edits... Response: I don't dark Alliance would be that interesting (Top down view of character and no real connection to the game :/ he's just a bonus character in both and he's replaced by "Elven ranger" in the Game boy advance version) (The few things drizzt says in DA is "Oh now the cheating begins" and I think "out of mana")
Demon Stone would be a whole lot more appropriate: Drizzt talks, fights and interacts with characters and defeats a Ice troll war-chef... Maybe even Menzoberranzan (game) (Drizzt talks (No sound) and also has a cool little "attack scene"). Now that I think about it... Baldurs gate EE and 2EE have higher resolution... I will see what I can do about this...
I imagine you just click a button for either character. I think most people would just pick their favourite character independent of the article, before checking out the article itself, if at all. But it should pick up some readers, and a few will follow the links. But sure, Terrorblades has a good idea. I invite everyone to pile on to the Drizzt-related articles and polish them up, or even add to them.
A scrollbar would be useful for long lists of references and appearances on the larger articles. I know Wookieepedia uses them. I'll have to do some hacking.
Demon Stone! That's the one I was thinking of, thanks. I've not actually played any of them though; regular Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, and Neverwinter Nights 1 are what I'm familiar with.
PS: They've also challenged the Baldur's Gate Wiki, our sister wiki. They're feeling brave. :)
I've written up a preliminary notice for the main page, to garner some interest. In a hopefully fun style. :) You can see it at User:BadCatMan/Sandbox. If no-one sees anything glaringly stupid about it, I'll put it on the Main Page.
*sigh* finely gotten to the part with drizzt and beaten it... made a test video of Cireka prologue... Its converting right now and it just struck me, I have no idea how to post videos on the wiki its the "Video" button shows me options to link one... If I cant post it on the wiki should we make a Youtube account or something?
I wouldn't go that far. :) But Terrorblades, you've already posted one video, File:Neverwinter_Sprite_Companion_Trailer. :)
Okay, I've looked at the video stuff, and it seems they can only come from the Wikia Video Library or another site like Youtube. So it looks like we will need Youtube after all.
So then I guess we should try to figure out rules and stuff for the channel? So that the channel being a official channel wiki, so I think the channel must be accessible by all Admins as a ground rule? Also have the "Drizzt Prolog" video ready to go. *sigh* I wish we could upload videos.
I don't know anything about Youtube I'm afraid. I watch a few videos but that's it. Does someone else know more?
I don't know much about video formats either, but the upload function apparently accepts .ogv video files. I don't know how that would work though.
Hello, here is Dutchman speaking for the Baldur's Gate Wiki. We have also been challenged in the very same contest against the Shadow of Mordor wiki. We are pitting Viconia DeVir against Galadriel, perhaps you should take some precautions for Viconia's page as well. The Baldur's Gate wiki adds an average 28K views each day on a normal week, which will hopefully be enough to win both challenges in favour of both wiki's.
Personally, I don't like these popularity contests very much, except that they attract people for the participating wiki's. As long as they don't attract many trolls and the like, won't complain much.
Also, Mark, or MarkvA is a Dutchman too, so hopefully he can double-Dutch the Shadow of Mordor wikia :) Furthermore, we could fight the trolls eye for an eye, with Lilarcor and Noober / Neeber, as a last solution. But hopefully this tournament can be played without disturbing the daily order.
Hmm. Not quite what I expected. An excessive number of pre-order ads, and no links back to our wiki or the Drizzt page (nor any other wiki) for comparison or voters to read about the characters. So, it's pretty one-sided. The new guy Talion keeps winning out in all matches. A bit sus, really, seeing as his game isn't even out yet... But he and Drizzt are neck and neck (70 to 71 at time of posting). I guess I'll go poke the sleeping giant that is FR fandom...
Actually if you mouse over the drizzt name you get the link to the wiki. Its not explained any where on the page tho :S! Hmm seams more and more that the only one whom wins is the game makers for the publicity...
