The Fraternity of Tharos was a fanatical demon-worshiping cult based in New Sarshel in Impiltur as of the late 15th century DR. The group took its name from the ancient Nar capital of Dun-Tharos.[1]
Organization[]
The group concocted vile plots that threatened the safety of ordinary Impilturians and had caused many to suffer.[2] They conducted bloody rituals inside an unmarked gray tower in New Sarshel. Their initiation rites required new members to kidnap innocent victims and then sacrifice them before the Demonstone which lay in the tower.[1]
Tactics[]
The cultists could call upon fiendish aid in battle for protection or even teleportation. They fought with fire and ash magics, and favored the hellish rebuke spell, which they wielded with fury to gain advantages in combat. They also used demonic magic to empower their weapons (usually lighter blades), causing them to glow and drip with ash or otherwise to erupt with incinerating hellfire.[3]
History[]
The cult came to prominence sometime after the Spellplague, and terrorized Impiltur. By 1479 DR, it became the mission of Impiltur's ruling Grand Council to eliminate the cult,[1] but they had still not succeeded at this by 1489 DR.[4]
Members[]
The Fraternity attracted the likes of rogues and warlocks of fiend patrons. Members were free to travel and to work as adventurers.[2]
Despite the despicable acts required to join, the cult was known to have imposters within its ranks who wielded their demonic gifts to undermine the Fraternity.[2]
