The Gilded Gallows was a ruthless thieves' guild operating in the Western Heartlands and the Sword Coast as of the late 15th century DR.[2][3]

Base of Operations[]

The guild was formed and based in Elturgard.[1]

History[]

As of the late 15th century DR, the Gilded Gallows was prospering and its influence was extending along the Sword Coast, with operatives as far north as Neverwinter.[3] Its symbol—a gold noose—had become instantly recognizable among criminals in the region.[1]

By the Year of the Grinning Halfling, 1481 DR,[note 1] rumors had surfaced that a high-ranking member had betrayed the guild to steal a large sum of money, and so members of the guild were motivated to track down this traitor and the wealth he had secreted away.[3] In fact, the traitor was Tarak, who had been ordered to kill his own lover and had instead chosen to flee the guild. His lover was ultimately assassinated by another member of the guild, and the story was twisted to accuse Tarak of murder and theft.[2]

Members[]

Guildmembers were known as "Gilders",[3] and included not only thieves but assassins, poisoners,[1] gamblers, smugglers, and goblins.[3] They recruited even very young children into their ranks, and trained them in stealth and deception.[3] Some high-ranking members had tattoos featuring the guild's golden noose symbol.[1]

Notes[]

  1. The pre-generated Fighter and Paladin character sheets included in the Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set (2022) describe the eruption of Mount Hotenow (1451 DR) as occurring "30 years ago", which places the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle adventure in 1481 DR. However, we note that this may be an error as it appears to be copied from Lost Mine of Phandelver, the adventure included in the Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set (2014), which was subsequently retconned in Acquisitions Incorporated to be set in 1491 DR.
