Gnarhelm was the capital city of the kingdom of Gnarhelm on the island of Alaron within the Moonshae Isles.[1][2][3][4]

Description[]

The town had wide and muddy streets.[6]

Geography[]

Gnarhelm was located near the center of the kingdom at the southern end of Salmon Bay. The city was situated on the rolling plains of grass and clover that dominated much of the land just east of Salmon Bay.[1][2][3][4][6] This region was the only major agricultural center in Gnarhelm.[7]

Government[]

The city was the historic seat of power for the kings of the broader realm of Gnarhelm.[8]

Defenses[]

In addition to a standing force of 300 footmen and 100 archers, the city boasted two large troops of cavalry, potentially numbering as many as 240 riders.[8][9]

Trade[]

The port was one of the main stopovers for maritime trade among the Northlander kingdoms of the Moonshaes, as well as for some trade north to Ruathym and Waterdeep.[7][10] Travel along Salmon Bay was difficult and time-consuming, and as such, much of Gnarhelm's trade within the isle of Alaron was conducted overland.[8]

History[]

In the mid–1330s DR, the city came under attack by pirates while King Sigurd Helmudson and his warriors were away. Fortunately for the townsfolk, Kings Thelgaar Ironhand of Oman and Grunnarch the Red of Norland arrived at the same time while traveling with Elminster, and their berserkers made short work of the pirates.[6]
