Granite was a type of hard igneous rock[4] found in many places in Faerûn[5][6] and beyond.[7][8][9]

Description[]

Granite was commonly grey in color,[10][5] but grey-green,[11] black,[12] pink[13] and white varieties also existed.[14] Its hardness made tunneling into granite a difficult enterprise.[4][15]

History[]

Sages versed in the topic assumed that granite was formed at high pressure within the earth.[16]

Quarries[]

Granite was quarried in the following places in the Realms:

It was also quarried on the planes:

Other Granite Deposits in the Realms[]

Beyond Toril[]

As a common type of stone, granite also occured and was used beyond Toril on the worlds of Aebrynis,[82] Athas,[83] Krynn,[84][85] Mystara,[86][87] and Oerth.[88][89]

On the planes, granite occured in the Barrens of Doom and Despair,[90] and, like any other type of stone, in the Elemental Plane of Earth.[91] Earth pockets within the Para-Elemental Plane of Magma manifested as granite pillars or rocks.[92] Granite figures could sometimes be found on the Quasi-Elemental Plane of Mineral: They were unfortunate visitors fallen victim to fossilization.[93]

White granite deposits were also common in the deep valleys of Eronia, the second layer of the Outer Plane of Elysium.[94]

Uses[]

Granite was a common building material for stone fortifications.[95] In Mulhorand, it was also favored for monuments, such as for the central crypt of a pyramid, and for the construction of tall, broad, ornate temples.[96] In Chessenta, granite was used for construction of temples.[97]

Granite Buildings in the Realms[]

Known granite buildings on the planes were:

Sculpting[]

Mulhorand granite was popular among foreign sculptors in the late 1350s DR.[18] For example, Chessentan sculptors typically worked in Mulhorand granite; it was also the custom to paint their finished works.[179]

In Kara-Tur, granite was a common material for sculpting.[180]

Granite was also the most common basis for dwarven runestones.[181]

Known works of art made of granite in the Realms were:

Magical Uses[]

Granite was a necessary component in several spells:

The stone was also basis for some magic items:

Notes[]

  1. The "dry ranges" were the lower of the non-wooded mountain ranges in the Hordlands, namely the Dustwall, Raurin Alta, Teyla Shan, Khopet-Dag, and the Kora Shan. Their slopes were "of granite and shale", but it is not clear which range contained which type of stone, or if all contained both.
  2. While Elminster called the material Caer Callidyrr was made of "strange, white granite" in Moonshae, Prophet of Moonshae states the castle was constructed of alabaster.
