A grant was a document awarding land, title, or monetary funds to an individual. The recipient of the grant could be specifically named within the document. Alternatively, the document might be issued without a designated recipient's name.[1]
A grant was a powerful document. A grant could:[1]
- Provide financial compensation when presented to a local ruler;[1]
- Assign the individual the position of a judge within a village;[1]
- Allow the individual to audit the tax records of a local ruler;[1]
- Allow the individual to act as an ambassador of the Grand Caliph;[1]
- Allow the individual to claim land to establish a town or a mosque;[1]
- Allow the individual to rule a village, providing protection in exchange for tax revenue;[1]
- Provide a ship; or [1]
- Allow the individual to establish a business or monopoly.[1]
