The Hand of Yartar was a guild of mostly female thieves and assassins operating within their namesake city, Yartar, of the Dessarin Valley.[1][2][3][4] However, its members were essentially independent, prioritizing their goals over those of the Hand and often leading to internal conflict; at nearly every moment, the organization was disrupted by the power struggles, rivalries, and underhanded backstabbing of its constituents.[1][2]

Relationships[]

The Hand was, according to Elminster, known to work with the elderly owners of the White-Winged Griffon, an inn of poor quality. Despite all outward appearances, these men would sometimes act as informants for the Hand, who paid to hear some of what been overheard or seen.[5]

Despite the organization's fractious nature, they treated the Wink and the Kiss as a kind of haven. They refused to draw any weapons, nor could they push towards their many quarrels, within this Yartaran festhall.[6][7]

History[]

In the Year of the Scarlet Witch, 1491 DR, the Hand of Yartar member Nareen Dhest stole a devastation orb from the Lord Protector's vaults in Triboar. Having no use for the weapon, the guild attempted to auction the item in the Wink and Kiss tavern in Yartar. However, another Hand named Haliyra Ravenfast secretly attempted to sell the item to agents of the Kraken Society instead.[8]

Members[]

The Hand of Yartar was mostly comprised of young women,[1][2] which Volo believed was because an older criminal—who had trouble outrunning a mark if they botched a theft—would not live long.[1] These included, as of the late 15th century DR:
