Harold was a unique enchanted heavy crossbow from the mercantile nation of Sembia, created sometime before the late 14th century DR as a commission for Fitzallus the Footpad.[1]

Powers[]

The original Harold was a heavy crossbow with a simple +2 enchantment that guided the bolts towards their goal and increased its damage potential. Additionally, targets struck with Harold's bolts had a good chance of suffering the effects of the doom spell.[1]

The version of the item from the 15th century DR was known for its +1 enchantment and the ability to inflict bane on its targets.[2]

History[]

Sometime before the late 14th century DR, Fitzallus the Footpad, a bard of Sembia, commissioned this enchanted crossbow. He endlessly praised the new weapon. The bard's excitement over the crossbow was such that his friends began teasing the bard, saying that the weapon was Fitzallus's new "best friend" and he needed to give it an appropriate name. When the enchanted crossbow was ready, Fitzallus proudly strolled into a tavern with a bright smile and announced to his friends the weapon's name: Harold. Several months later, Fitzallus died during a burglary. According to his will, Harold was to be buried with the bard, yet the crossbow disappeared before the funeral.[1]

Sometime later, by the Year of the Banner, 1368 DR, Harold ended up in the hands of Rhynwis, the head of a fledgling thieves' guild on the Sword Coast North during Caelar Argent's crusade against Avernus.[1]

Another copy of the weapon, or perhaps the original with its history misattributed, surfaced in the 15th century DR in the City of Splendors, Waterdeep. They said that Harold was named after Harold Butterbisk, the owner of the Butterbisk Inn. That weapon had an engraving on its stock that read: "Quaffing is a shootable offense." That crossbow ended up in the hands of Zarys, the woman who led a Zhentarim cell operating from the caverns underneath Waukeen's Rest in the Chionthar Valley in the Year of Three Ships Sailing, 1492 DR.[2]
