Heavy flails, otherwise known as a footman's flail,[4] was a larger version of the standard flail.[5]
Description[]
Heavy flails typically had longer shafts, about 4 feet (1.2 meters) long[6], with a hinged[7] or chained heavier spiked ball or rod on the end. Some had an elongated top spike to give them even greater reach..[5]
Weaponology[]
Heavy flails were typically used as two-handed weapons. They could be used to trip an opponent and their flexible chains increased the chance of entangling an enemy weapons, thereby disarming them.[8]
History[]
Heavy flails derived from an agricultural tool known as a threshing flail.[7][9]
