Ilya Shkipin is a California-based freelance artist who has worked as an illustrator on several Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition products since the line's inception. In 2023, he was involved in a controversy over the use of Artificial Intelligence in art that he submitted to Wizards of the Coast.
Education[]
Shkipin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in illustration from the Academy of Art in San Francisco.
Controversy[]
In August 2023 news broke that some users who had pre-ordered Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants on the D&D Beyond service had noticed irregularities in the artwork from the book that was attributed to Shkipin. They speculated online that the art could have been created using Artificial Intelligence.
It was soon discovered that Shkipin had previously given an interview in December 2022 to AI Art Weekly about how he used AI in his work, and later spoke on Twitter, confirming that although he had, in fact, used some AI processes in the art he'd submitted for Glory of the Giants, the art was not fully AI-generated.
This prompted a response from Wizards of the Coast, who moved to update their Artist Guidelines to reflect their opposition to the use of AI in the art submitted for their publications. Shkipin stated that he would rework the art in Glory of the Giants.

Shkipin has worked on numerous sourcebooks for the 5th edition of Dungeons & Dragons.
