In the Abyss is a 2nd-edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons adventure module. It is part of the Planescape campaign setting.
Every sod's got a tale to tell about the Abyss - it's the sinkhole of the multiverse, after all, peopled with every kind of scum a body can imagine and a few he can't. Never been there? Well, there's no time like the present.
In the Abyss is a PLANESCAPE adventure for a party of four to six characters who are of levels 8 to 10. A simple errand to salvage the lost ship of chaos allows the player characters their first opportunity to explore the most notorious plane of them all. Of course, complications are as inevitable as the tanar'ri!Description[]
In the Abyss was written by Ray Vallese and was first published by TSR, Inc. in 1994.
The adventure is designed for characters of levels 9 to 12 and takes place primarily in the Abyss. The plot revolves around the players' efforts to rescue a kidnapped NPC from the clutches of a powerful demon lord, who has taken up residence in a massive, labyrinthine fortress in the heart of the Abyss.
The adventure is divided into several different chapters, each of which is designed to challenge the players in different ways. These challenges include navigating the unpredictable and hostile terrain of the Abyss, battling powerful demons and other creatures, and solving puzzles and riddles to advance through the fortress.
One of the key features of In the Abyss is its emphasis on the exotic and dangerous nature of the Abyss. The adventure is designed to immerse players in the unique and often surreal landscape of the plane, with its twisted geography and bizarre inhabitants. The module also includes a wealth of background information on the various demons and demon lords that inhabit the Abyss, as well as on the different factions and organizations that operate within the Planescape setting.
Overall, In the Abyss is a challenging and memorable adventure module that is well-suited to experienced players and Dungeon Masters. Its emphasis on the exotic and dangerous nature of the Abyss, as well as its intricate plot and memorable NPCs, make it a standout example of the creativity and innovation that characterizes the Planescape setting.
