Kamerynn was a unicorn and one of the children of the Earthmother of the Moonshae Isles. He was a demipower within the Isles, where he was known as The Unicorn, the king of the wilderness, and the king of all wild things, although he only acted in such a lordly capacity when he chose to.[1][2][3] It was speculated that he might also have been an aspect of the goddess Lurue[4] or a minor avatar of Eachthighern, the patron of unicorns and pegasi.[5]

Description[]

Kamerynn was snowy white, with a white beard and mane as soft as satin.[1][6][7] He was taller, stronger, and faster than any other unicorn on the Moonshae Isles,[1] and his horn was nearly 4 feet (1.2 meters) long.[7] Merely catching a glimpse of him could leave the viewer in awe for the rest of their days. However, he preferred not to be seen, and kept to the most remote and tangled paths to avoid contact with anyone else.[3] His movements were almost completely silent as he traveled through the wilderness.[1]

Personality[]

Kamerynn was proud,[8] wise,[9] highly intelligent,[10] and feared no creature in nature.[1] Normal beasts always made way for him as he cantered and galloped across the Isles, and he never trampled on a flower as he moved.[11]

He refused to allow anyone to ride him save for pure-hearted maidens who were blessed by the Earthmother.[1]

Abilities[]

Kamerynn was tougher and more formidable than the average unicorn, and preferred to skewer his enemies upon his horn rather than trample them. He could sense any other creature within 36 feet (11 meters) of himself, and could innately use dimension door to immediately cover that same distance. Alternatively, he would approach his enemies in almost complete silence.[1]

He could not be harmed by any poison nor by death magic. In fact, he was highly resistant to all magic, and could not be charmed or held.[1] His sensitivity to magic was such that he could see invisible creatures[12] and could perceive illusions even if physically blinded.[13]

If slain or taken by old age, a period of up to six years would pass before a younger unicorn would assume the mantle of the Eathmother's child.[1][8]

Activities[]

He dwelt within a grove of tall oak and aspen trees surrounding a moonwell in the Myrloch Vale of Gwynneth. Kamerynn slept within his shady lair beneath a high hedge of mistletoe when he was not needed, but would rouse when he or the Earthmother saw fit. He would drink from the moonwell and then gallop across the wilds of Gwynneth.[1][11] He was regarded as the protector of the glens and fields of the Moonshae Isles.[6][9]

Relationships[]

As one of the Eathmother's "children", he heeded her calls to protect the Moonshae Isles from any threats, and was one of her more potent weapons.[14] He could commune with her via moonwells,[11] and she used the wells to give him commands.[15]

The Ffolk and the druids of the Moonshaes regarded Kamerynn as a symbol of good, freedom, and the wild places of the Isles.[1] The fey of Sarifal regarded him as a mortal aspect of the Earthmother herself.[16]

History[]

The Earthmother's children.

The Earthmother's children.

The first Kamerynn was an elder unicorn said to have been the second of the Earthmother's children to appear in the Moonshae Isles (after the Leviathan and before The Pack), arriving circa −10,000 DR.[6][9] He dwelt first upon Gwynneth before wandering across Alaron, Moray, and the rest of the Moonshaes. It was said that he had dwelt upon every island in the archipelago at some point.[6]

When Kazgaroth first appeared in the Moonshaes circa −2000 DR, Kamerynn and the other children of the Earthmother allied with the Llewyrr elves and the dwarves to drive it off.[6][9]

By the Year of the Saddle, 1345 DR, the unicorn known as Kamerynn was very old, although age had not dulled his strength or his senses.[1] In Ches of that year, Kazgaroth arose once more in the Myrloch Vale, prompting the Earthmother to awaken her children to defend the Moonshaes. Kamerynn heeded her call, but was captured by firbolgs in service to Kazgoroth on Mirtul 15.[11][17] He was imprisoned within the "Big Cave" in the Fens of the Fallen until Mirtul 30 when Tristan Kendrick and his companions arrived. Kamerynn freed himself to ally with the young adventurers, and would come to bond with one of them, Robyn, permitting her to ride him.[17][18] In the ensuing Darkwalker War, Kamerynn was blinded, but still managed to slay one of Kazgoroth's key lieutenants, Laric of the Bloodriders, with the help of the faerie dragon Newt.[19]

The next year, after his eyes had miraculously healed,[7] the god Bhaal strove to seize the Moonshae Isles. As Bhaal's corruption spread throughout the Myrloch Vale, Kamerynn fought a losing battle against the tide of zombies and occasional peryton.[10] On Marpenoth 15, he arrived in the Fens of the Fallen and faced Shatu, a mighty displacer beast in Bhaal's service, and although he managed to wound the foul creature, Kamerynn would lose this fight and perish.[17][20] His successor would not be spotted in the wilds of the Moonshaes for almost two decades.[21]

Rumors & Legends[]

Kamerynn was said to be the ancestor of the horses of the Moonshaes,[6] specifically a breed of white warhorses bred by the Llewyrr of Synnoria and ridden by the Sisters of Synnoria.[22]
