Mad Maggie was a night hag warlord and leader of the Knucklebones Gang, and operated Fort Knucklebone, in Avernus, in the late 15th century DR.[1]

Personality[]

Mad Maggie on the surface acted as a gentle grandmother but in truth she was a cruel and scheming individual. She had become obsessed with Zariel's story as she had a great interest in the corruption of valiant souls.[1]

History[]

Mad Maggie went to Avernus in search of the ultimate misery. There she found a piece of a tapestry that chronicled the history and the fall of Zariel. Wanting to know more, Mad Maggie searched all over the plane of Avernus for many years for more pieces of the tapestry.[1]

In the Year of Three Ships Sailing, 1492 DR,[note 1] Mad Maggie may have met the hollyphant Lulu, who inside her fractured memory knew all about Zariel.[1]

Relationships[]

Mad Maggie ruled over the Knucklebones Gang, comprising many fey creatures, possibly a collection of sixty redcaps, including the redcap Wazzik, her fiendish flesh golem named Mickey, the kenku mechanics Chukka and Clonk, the imps Pins and Needles, a flameskull, and a collection of thirty madcaps.[1][2]

Mad Maggie had also struck bargains with powerful fey who could supply Mad Maggie with additional redcaps.[3]

Notes[]

  1. Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus is set in 1492 DR per the "Baldur's Gate Gazetteer" section (p. 159) and a clarification from the adventure's lead writer. Baldur's Gate III, which is a direct sequel to Descent into Avernus set immediately after its events, is also set in 1492 DR. In an apparent error, pages 7 and 47 of Descent into Avernus describes certain events as occurring "fifty years" after 1444 DR (1494 DR).
